Little Joy Record Streaming on Myspace

Little Joy - "Keep Me in Mind"

It's no secret we dig the new Little Joy record featuring Fab from the Strokes. Yet, there have been some dissenting opinions in the Stark ranks about the quality of the record (we can't all agree people!). Thankfully, the good folks from Little Joy are streaming their self-titled debut on their myspace page, so you, the listener, can decide for yourself. The official release is Nov 4 on Rough Trade. Enjoy, or don't enjoy. It don't matter to the Jesus.

New Bruce Springsteen-aween Video

How spooky! Here Springsteen invokes his inner Tom Waits in a Halloween-inspired, cliche blues tune. We kind of dig the evangelical, sermonizing, cross-wearing Boss. He just looks so damn demanding, that we want to convert to whatever he is preaching about. Reminds us of Paul Dano a.k.a Eli Sunday from "There Will Be Blood."

This video makes us never want to spend an evening with the Jersey Devil. Thanks for ruining that for us Bruce.

Happy Halloween Fuckers. Go carve a pumpkin.

Tweedy Brings Wilco and Lapel Flags to the Colbert Report

A lapel flag-wearing Jeff Tweedy graced the Colbert Report last night for a quick, highly snarky (in a good way) interview and exclusive performance of "Wilco the Song." Colbert commented on his flag pin, to which Tweedy responded "Where's yours?." Not to be topped, Colbert returns from commercial break wearing not one, but SIX lapel flags. What could be MORE American than that?! The song was good, pretty funny, even throwing in a few shout out's to Colbert himself. Could Wilco be the most patriotic band in the Nation? Cast your vote. You decide.

Phinally!

My sincere apologies go out to the loyal readers of Stark today, for I have neglected you over the last week. You see, these guys have been taking up quite a bit of my time as of late, but I think I'm PHINALLY ready to return to the blog. Because we're world champions. God, it feels great to say that.

But I don't want to alienate our non-sports fans, so I'll drop a tasty Philly music nugget for you: a brand new Dr. Dog video podcast via NPR's All Things Considered. (Because, hey, we've got to keep things relevant around here.) Check it out HERE! And I don't know if you've heard, but if you're in the 2-1-5 tomorrow, well, there's a parade you should probably check out. I'll be there! (And so will three million others, because knowing us, this is a once-in-a-lifetime deal.)

Congratulations Phillies!

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

animal collective
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE: Merriweather Post Pavillion
RELEASED JANUARY 20th, 2009 via DOMINO RECORDS

Tuesday night I trekked up to the nosebleeds (145th and Riverside) to attend my first-ever “listening party”, hosted by Motormouth Media and Domino Records, in honor of Animal Collective’s much-anticipated new album, Merriweather Post Pavilion. It was worth the trek.

Despite the odd location (The Riverside Lounge? I’m pretty sure nobody ever goes there), and the positively heinous sound quality, I had myself a grand old time. While most records, and Animal Collective’s in particular, require several listens to fully digest, I feel confident in saying that the new album is thoroughly banging. Over the course of its 11 tracks, the album is ethereal, dancey, melodic, aquatic, and interestingly enough, more accessible than any AC album to date. Gone is the fabulously, crazy-vocal exhibition from Avey Tare that we heard on Strawberry Jam. But, in its place are so many thumping beats, whispers, and fluid harmonies that I hardly missed it. If you weren’t already excited for the new album, get excited. Merriweather Post Pavilion is out Jan. 20, 2009 in the U.S. and Jan. 12 in the U.K.

"Twist and Shout" In This Year's Ferris Bueller Themed Halloween Parade

File this one in the "marginally about music, but still awesome" file. According to reports on bizbash.com - at this year's Halloween parade in the West Village (of NY), there will be a full-scale recreation of that amazing downtown Chicago parade scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Scantily clad bar-maids and other vintage 80's-style folks will once again dance around a glorious German themed float to The Beatles' "Twist and Shout." We usually stay away from the parade like the plague - but this could be some damn good fun to watch.
"Event organizers confirmed Tuesday that the Ferris Bueller float will be a participant in this year’s Village Halloween Parade.

The brainchild of artists Mina Karimi and Kara Suhey, Project Bueller aims to recreate the Von Steuben Day parade scene from the 1986 John Hughes film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The scene in question, you might remember, finds Matthew Broderick taking over a parade float and inspiring much of Chicago to join him in a round of the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.”

In addition to participation from people on the float (who will be wearing matching barmaid uniforms), organizers are hoping parade watchers will help out. Everyone is encouraged to wear '80s business casual attire for added authenticity.

“It’s just the kind of thing we love,” said the parade’s artistic producing director, Jeanne Fleming. “The Halloween Parade, in one sense, is the Art Parade. A lot of the same folks work on both. And if you’re going to put that much effort out there, you might as well get it seen by a million people.”"
Fist pump to TICE on this one.

Secret Myspace Ting Ting's Show in Philly on Halloween

Ting Tings - Great DJ - mp3
Philadelphia fans of the Ting Tings (what up Mom!) will be delighted to know that the catchy pop duo have just announced a "secret" myspace show at the Barbary on Halloween. Doors open at 7:30pm and fans are encouraged to wear their best cliche rock star costumes. Along with MGMT and the Black Kids, the Ting Ting's have had quite the successful year for a break-out band - most of that success came from licensing (cough, iPod commercial) but that's the way things roll these days just ask Santogold.

McCarren Pool Reprise - King Khan Live Video

Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com

Look at Khan in all his glory. We had just seen him the night before McCarren at the Mercury Lounge -- a show which raged on past 3 am. Khan was burnt out, yet somehow he still managed to muster the ball-breaking vocal screams, softcore nudity and dirty sexual innuendos. Oh and yeah, that cheerleader is still rocking hard. Gotta love her. "Everyone get a dollar bill out. Don't be fucking assholes," Khan says. Well, sorry Khan, you made us burn all our money the night before. Yep, we thought that was against the law. Anyway, Baeble Music just released this live video so enjoy.

Ben Sollee Tour Alert + New Two Song EP

Nashville native and Stark favorite Ben Sollee recently released two new songs via an EP titled, Something Worth Keeping. Starting Nov.1, Sollee will embark on a tour of the US behind this short EP and debut album Learning To Bend. Although minimal in length, Sollee seems very adamant about these two new tracks titled, "Only A Song" (feat. Jim James of My Morning Jacket) and "Mute Bullhorn." There is definitely something more personal at play here as reflected in a note Sollee recently wrote in regard to the EP.
He writes,

"....There are many eloquent ideas out there about renewable energy, educational systems, and governing, but realizing them means trying new things; which is daunting at least, and terrifying at most. As my generation takes the reins we should not sacrifice some qualities of this nation and the land in its boundaries to the wayfaring spirit of economy. They are important for Americans, our children, and the rest of the world.

These thoughts inspired these two new songs. But they are only songs…"

Ok Ben. Ok.

Featured Releases This Week

Just wanted to take a quick second to post on some nice under-the-radar releases this week. Most notably, the newest posthumous release from noted downtown NY artist Arthur Russell. While relatively unknown during his time, Russell produced several groundbreaking records in the worlds of electronica and disco. Russell's newest release, Love is Overtaking Me, draws from his acoustic/folk background and showcases his wonderful songwriting. The songs echo the feel of his home state, Iowa, as he sings lonesomely of lost love and cornfields.

Also released is the striking and highly autumnal new record from Larkin Grimm. While we may have just gotten into her, Grimm's record,
Parplar, has quickly found it's way into regular rotation. It's much more eclectic than your traditional folk/singer songwriter record, yet it doesn't stray too far into the "freaky" world that people seem to have grown quickly tired of. Grimm's voice is fantastic, but still has enough of that backwoods grit to make it believable and interesting. Definitely recommended.

Other records released today are the aforementioned debut
Exposion from White Denim as well as Ryan Adams' follow up to Easy Tiger, Cadinology. Further records we recommend are the new Hank Williams collection, Deerhunter's excellent Microcastle and the new Bloc Party record Intimacy.

White Denim - "Exposion" Available Now!

Austin trio White Denim finally released their debut record Exposion via their direct fan-to-band subscription site. It seems like this record has been around forever, but honestly that's not a bad thing. We caught them in NY last week and their live show was just as kick ass as the record. You can get the digital download or order vinyl through the band's website. Subscribers will get things like a limited 7", limited live tracks, videos, artwork by Steve and the album, which is also available in FLAC format.

CMJ Hangover 2008: Most Surprisingly Fun Showcase

Perhaps it was the buzz from a days worth of cheap beer, but the most fun we had all week was at the Luaka Bop showcase at Santos Party house on Friday. The DJ was spinning some great tunes from their back catalog as things began to materialize seemingly out of nowhere. All of the sudden my compatriot was wearing a snakeskin jacket (with zipper) and a blond wig. Soon, members of the band Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt had outfitted half the audience with costumes... wigs, hats, inflatable-pink dogs and monkeys. Then, as the music began (which can be described as pseudo annoying dance music for the nerdier sorts, with hints of catchy-ass Latin rhythms thrown in) the lead singer appeared draped in a suit of stuffed animals. Add confetti shot from fans and we had a regular Flaming Lips- style dance party on our hands. It continued for about 20 minutes, with the protagonist eventually changing into a suit of Christmas lights. Then, abruptly the show was over. It was perfect. There was no real opportunity to grasp what was going on, nor for it to go stale. As surprisingly as they had come, Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt were gone. We can't say their new 3-inch record thrills us all that much, but for a Friday evening at 6:30pm, their set was the perfect pregame cocktail. Thanks to Tell All Your Friends PR for this one!

CMJ Hangover 2008: The Best

FRIENDLY FIRES
We caught the Friendly Fires twice during CMJ and they were clearly one of the best we saw all week. We have one Ms. Lucy Wood to thank for getting us out to the Annex on Wednesday to catch the UK quartet in action. They did not disappoint. Blending the best from bands such as Hot Chip and Radiohead (at their most rock and roll,) the Friendly Fires brought passion, great songs, great voices and excellent musicianship to the stage. With heavy use of cowbells, an alternate percussion set and various electronic keyboard elements, the Fires created pulsing-dance-rock; their sound was surprisingly much larger than one would expect from a quartet. We loved them so much we made sure to haul ass to get to Pianos by 3 pm to see them again at the Brooklyn Vegan day party. Although it took them a bit longer to get warmed up (I mean it was 3) they eventually brought the intensity to match the show the evening before. We ran into lead NY Times music writer Jon Parales during the show, and even Mr. Parales let on that the Friendly Fires, were one of, if not THE best thing he had seen at CMJ to date. Although it's hard to judge the buzz during the actual marathon, we received text messages and emails all telling us to make sure we caught them. Hopefully they can ride their CMJ successes to bigger things in the upcoming year. The Friendly Fires self titled record is out now on XL. LIVE VIDEO FROM LEVI'S/FADER FORT AFTER THE JUMP.

AUDRYE SESSIONS
The best thing about the week of shows during CMJ is accidentally stumbling upon a band on the brink of the big time, when no one else seems to be watching. We found ourselves at the Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night to catch Shugo Tokumaru and Cory Chisel at the Sony showcase. After great sets from Chisel and Tokumaru, California new-comers Audrye Sessions took the stage. After a slow start, they brought on various guest musicians forming a small chamber ensemble (strings and wind) to complement their quartet. From there things took off. The results were a blend of sweeping U2- style arena-rock, mixed with an infusion of Oasis pop songwriting. While maybe not our personal favorites, Audrye Sessions is clearly a band with a skyward trajectory. Signed to the new Sony imprint Black Seal headed by trusted industry veteran Matt Shay, Audrye sessions are a market ready band with the image, money, and music to make a true push into the mainstream. They have an EP coming this fall and a full length planned for Januray 2009. It will be interesting to see what comes from a band with this much potential in a market-place still plagued with challenges.

Julia Nunes Is F*!@ng Adorable

I've got a new obsession, and thy name be Julia Nunes. What started out as an innocent crush has blossomed into an absolute fixation; this girl has got me smitten. After a friend forwarded me a link to her cover of Weezer's "Keep Fishin", I proceeded to watch every single video on her mega-popular YouTube channel, and I've been floored ever since. Her off-kilter voice takes the best parts of a soulful Zooey Deschanel and a childish Kimya Dawson. She makes great use of the ukelele, transforming big popular indie hits into intimate desert island/dorm-room performances. She overdubs herself with perfect harmonies and a kitschy melodica, sometimes with the help of her college roomates and whoever else feels like joining in. She's refreshingly candid and insanely charming, from her infectious smile to her quirky confessions to the camera. You simply can't knock on this girl. She's even parlayed her Internet success into a full-fledged (albeit part-time) solo career, performing her great originals with the likes of none other than Ben Folds. I've included a slew of her covers below. I strongly urge you to check the rest out -- don't blame me if you spend the whole day doing so -- because this girl is a star in the making. In the words of Maeby Funke, "marry me!"

Weezer "Keep Fishing"
Spoon "The Underdog"

Bright Eyes "The First Day Of My Life"

Way more videos of Ben Folds, The Beach Boys, and yes, Kanye covers can be found via YouTube.

'...at the party we will be giving away a new Glass Candy cd called DEEP GEMS,
which is a collection of singles, b sides, and rarities. in between touring like
crazy, glass candy has been in the studio every possible moment working on a new
lp for 2009. in the meantime, deep gems is a collection of rare tracks recorded
between march 2006 and october 2008...' "

Now go forth and CMJ your lives away. Please keep us updated on acts we may pass over in our coverage.

Hank Williams Compilation Hits Next Week

Fist pump to ND on this one.

Does your bucket have a hole in it? Well then fill it with Hank Williams: The Unreleased Recordings set to release next week -- we think it's going to be pretty, pretty, pretty cool. It's coming out in installments over the next three years. Yeah, the William's recordings are plentiful. Let's see, 143 unreleased songs/three years = let me do the math, about 46.666, repeating of course, songs per year. Go Hank

Anyway, there is a blog devoted entirely to these tunes. Hank Unreleased. Dig it.

After the jump.

CMJ Watch IV: Shugo Tokumaru, Women, Cory Chisel, Ane Brun, Friendly Fires

Wednesday's fixin' to be a big night on the town for us. The beginning part of the evening finds us at the Bowery Ballroom to catch Cory Chisel and Shugo. We're pretty jazzed for Shugo as he has played several times in NYC, but we have yet to catch him. His new record Exit, is fantastic. Canadian band, Women are quickly becoming one of the "buzz bands" to catch at this year's festival, so we'll head up the Ludlow street way to catch them at Cake Shop round 11:15pm.

On the way, we're hitting up the lovely (and Swedish) Ane Brun who is playing the Living Room behind her new record Changing of the Seasons. She's on at 10:00pm. Also don't forget about Dent May and Beach House at Le Poisson Rouge tonight as well.

Gotta give a shout out for all of our British friends and trans-Atlantic readers - Friendly Fires are playing tonight, which is Brit night at the Annex. Their new self-titled record is fantastic -- we're going to catch 'em at tomorrow's Brooklyn Vegan day party at Pianos, which is also shaping up to be an amazing afternoon of tunes.
Whew.

Little Joy
Little Joy (Rough Trade)
Release Date: Nov. 4, 2008
Rating 78%

Little Joy - "Keep Me in Mind"
With several tracks that sound like one-time candidates for the Room On Fire tracklist, and lead vocals that bear startling resemblance to those of Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas, (or possibly a more chipper Jake Bellows... anyone?), Little Joy is nothing you haven’t heard before. Still, if you’re like me, that shouldn’t cheapen your enjoyment of this strong debut from Fabrizio Moretti of the Strokes, Binki Shapiro, and Rodrigo Amarante (singer/guitarist of Los Hermanos) --production by the talented Noah Georgeson (Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom,)

According to the band’s Myspace page, Amarante and Moretti met through a chance encounter at a Portuguese festival in Lisbon -- both kept in touch while Amarante recorded with Devendra Banhart a year later. Binki Shapiro, L.A. native and musician, was introduced to the two through mutual friends and Little Joy was born. If the Strokes are quintessentially New York, Little Joy is their Cali counterpart; warm, happy melodies abound as the album channels beach fun and bare feet. Still, it’s not an incongruous release for November, and even strictly seasonal listeners will be able to enjoy this one with snow on the ground. Shapiro’s vocals on several tracks add a 40s-vintage feel while simultaneously reminding you that this isn’t a Strokes record after all.

There are many different reasons to love a record. I happen to like this album for reasons completely opposite from those that compel me to love Animal Collective records (sorry Andrew). In other words, people who love to hate on an easy-to-love, pop-rock record (you know who you are) might find this album an easy target, but that’s lame. Little Joy isn’t innovating, they just refuse to fix what’s not broken, and there’s no shame in that.

Good for Gang Gang?

Photo Credit: Robert Wright for The New York Times

The NYT 's gave Gang Gang Dance a pretty nice spread in today's Arts section. Also acting as a pseudo-CMJ-artist-highlight-article, journalist Melena Ryzik discusses Gang Gang's move from cult status to "band of the moment." So, in other words, they have increased their terror level to magenta, now up from chartreuse.

We can't ascertain whether Gang Gang care about their new-found public championing. Doesn't seem that way. Anyway, we are really enjoying their new album, so who gives a shit about trendiness. Anyway, read for yourself.

Oh and Happy CMJing! Leave us comments about artists that really rock out with their proverbial cock out this week.

White Denim
Mercury Lounge
NY, New York
10.19.2008

Due to lack of photos on flickr and general assholery on the part of the Stark staff, we have no photos of the show last night.

CMJ week unofficially kicked off for Stark last night at the Mercury Lounge with a full dose of White Denim, Amazing Baby and Papertrigger.

All we can really say is that we hope Amazing Baby stuck around for White Denim's set so they could see what a real rock band looks and sounds like. (Unfortunately, we saw them cooing with their rhinestone-studded, headband-wearing groupies out at the bar.)

White Denim sounded like an inverted, crazy-ass, 2008-version of the Allman Brothers. Lead singer James Petralli captured a fantastic amalgamation of Greg Allman's southern-soul and growl all while sounding completely cutting edge and modern. The Austin, TX trio focused largely on their instrumental sections, employing tasteful loops, and complex song structures -- the vocals were just the icing on this delicious, bourbon-infused cake of a night. Drummer Joshua Block covered the part of both the Allman's drummers with ease and style. (There's no quicker way into our hearts than a damn good drummer). The set was amazingly tight and their stage energy matched the excitement of their music. Sometimes the hype machine is correct - White Denim might be the best thing we see all week. They play in NY again tonight at Union Hall.

White Denim just released their debut, Exposion today via Topspin -- a direct band-to-fan service also employed by David Byrne and Brian Eno on their recent release. Go HERE to sign up.

**A quick note on the openers...
After a rather unfortunate set by Papertrigger, Amazing Baby took the stage. They basically looked like Spinal Tap, compared to White Denim. Their cliche of the night was TIEDYE (WHOO!) and vintage Jim Morrison-beaded necklaces. Their back-up singers were still off-key and they still don't have good songs - nor do they have a good drummer.
Too harsh? We don't think so.

CMJ Watch III: Caitlin Rose

Caitlin Rose, purveyor of her own brand of "cosmic American music" and Bobbie's Dairy Dip ice cream, makes her annual trip from Nashville to NYC for a week of shows, most during CMJ.

While some New Yorkers stay away from CMJ due to it's "crowds", "hype", and "hipster kids" - Rose is a reason to make it out. Many bands during CMJ can be seen throughout the year at NYvenues, but the real treats come in the form of artists like Rose who can only make it to NY about once a year.

She draws from all forms of country music, but manages to maintain a unique sound that recalls such influences as Gram Parsons, Patsy Cline and Townes Van Zandt. Yet, she plays with her own attitude and style - driving each song with lyrics like "true love is a shotgun wedding" (fist pump to Bristol Palin.) Rose can sing in a sometimes quirky voice, but can also wail like the aforementioned Ms. Cline.

Caitlin Rose is here for seven days playing four shows, so you jaded bastards have no excuse for not coming to at least one. She also hates the word "indie" so you won't be getting too much of that here. Rose's EP Dead Flowers and 7" Gorilla Man are out now and available HERE for $5.

CMJ Watch II: Luaka Bop Showcase

So for the first time since 1994, David Byrne's Luaka Bop label will hold a fall showcase in NY during CMJ. The occasion? Luaka's release of a creative new 3-inch series featuring three new (to us at least) artists named Yonlu, Marcio Local and Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt. From what we've heard HERE, every artist is worth checking out. The Luaka Bop showcase happens Friday, October 24 from 5-7 at Santos Party House. Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt will be playing and DJ Justin Carter will spin selections from the 3-inch records as well as Luaka Bop's amazing catalog. Definitely put this on your calendar. See below for descriptions of each artist from the Luaka press release. All 3" records are available now...

"THE TERROR PIGEON DANCE REVOLT
The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt is a never- ending romp of a dance party; looped pianos and saxes race on top of crappy synths and ill beats, and like twenty vocal takes (seriously, like totally rivaling Broken Social Scene status) are mixed in there somewhere.

YONLU
Yonlu revealed just a fraction of his talent for experimentalism and a capacity to create delicate melancholy melodies before taking his own life at age 16, leaving behind works that are something between Badly Drawn Boy, Tortoise and Nick Drake.

MARCIO LOCAL

Marcio Local is a sexy samba beast and he has the hairy chest to prove it. His soulful style recalls Jorge Ben and his band is fully outfitted to rock with drums, guitar, bass, sax, trombone, trumpet and loads of percussion. The album was produced by Mario Caldato of Beastie Boys fame.

CMJ Watch: Beach House, Dent May, Fight Bite, Bell

Dent May sans magnificent ukulele

Dent May - "Meet Me in the Garden" - mp3
Finding a loaded showcase can make a night on the streets of CMJ much easier. It eliminates all the running around, half drunk and tired trying to find your way to the next show. That being said, here are two showcases where you could sit all night and relax. We know you won't - but you COULD.

The first is the Paw Tracks/Car Park/Force Field PR showcase at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night (10/22). Highlights here are definitely new-comer Dent May and Beach House. Paw Tracks will release May's debut The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele February 2. Apparently he recorded this in a trailer in his home town of Taylor, Mississippi. Yeah, it's a bit of a wait, but his Serge Gainsbourg-inspired tropicalia is certainly worth it. Definitely one to watch for in 2009.

Fite Bite "The Accident" - mp3
That brings us to a loaded Thursday evening (10/23) at Pianos for the Force Field PR showcase featuring Stark favorite Fight Bite, as well as Bell, Crystal Stilts, and Stars Like Fleas. Like we said, you could easily saddle up at Pianos for the entire evening. Texas duo Fight Bite's debut album Emerald Eyes is due October 28th. Emerald Eyes is filled with gauzy synths, lovely reverb-drenched vocals, and melancholy overtones. Put it on the list.

Buckle Up for CMJ 2008

It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous, music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.)

Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky.

From Nashville to Chicago to NYC, Stark has highlighted a few performers we hope to see (won't be able to see 'em all.)
- Caitlin Rose - Ezra Furman - De Novo Dahl - Gang Gang Dance - Lykke Li - Deerhoof - Crystal Castles - mr. Gnome - Sam Champion - Wye Oak - Chairlift - Beach House - Death Vessel - Dent May- Marissa Nadler and tons more.

Full CMJ line up after the jump. Selected concert times to come.
