Dent May Goes Electro
The venerated man with a uke, Mr. Dent May, drops the first single from his forthcoming album Do Things coming June 12. With "Best Friend" he seems to have dropped the uke gig and gone all synth-lounge on us. Either way the track's pretty solid, and Dent's tunes are always worthwhile listens. Looking fwd to hearing more.

New Dent May: "That Feeling"

[mp3] Dent May: "That Feeling"
Last week came news that GVB's Forest Family Records will release a new 7" from another longtime Stark staple Dent May. The ukulele wielding Southern crooner, has rare flair for crafting loungey spring and summertime jams best consumed with a cool mint julep, or something equally delicious and intoxicating. GVB reports that May's upcoming Paw Track's LP will be due sometime "next year-ish" so for now, we'll revel in two new tracks on the 7".

Dent May & His Magnificent Fall Tour
Yours Truly Presents: BANDITOS Episode 1 with Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele from Yours Truly on Vimeo.
Dent May - "Meet Me in the Garden"
If you aren't following Dent May on Twitter you should be. It's a nice stream of consciousness, lately pertaining to his travels in Europe. He allows you to live vicariously through his 140-character posts touching on everything from illness, late nights, scenic views and run-ins with local police. Also, don't ask us why, but we at Stark have a not-so-secret affinity for HOWARD! Dent May's music is so light and airy that his songs make clouds and cocktails disappear. Next thing you know, you are drunk and staring at a bright pink beer Koosie that says 'I'm an alcoholic' on the side, and you immediately remember why you love this band.Regardless, his live performance is not to be missed, especially being that his upcoming tour finds him sharing bills with the The Fiery Furnaces among others.

Yours Truly Presents: BANDITOS Episode 1 with Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele from Yours Truly on Vimeo.
Mexican anyone? Hmm. Sour cream, guac, deciding between the salsa Verde enchilada or the traditional red chili enchilada and in comes Dent May. We give you, BANDITOS. Come on that shit is just too easy. But, hey, I like Mexican and Dent May, so why not combine the two into some sort of musically-infused mexicana-blue plate special. I'm game.Tour dates after the jump.

Howard's Got A One Man Show
You all know how much we love Dent May around these parts. We post about the bespectacled troubadour like, all the time. He's the only musician in Stark history to be featured as an I Shall Be Released, On The Blog Reel AND an Artist To Watch 2009, so you know our love for this cat is legit. So anyway, adoring preface not needed this time. Check out Dent's new video for "Howard," a personal favorite from January's excellent The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and His Magnificent Ukelele. There are so many great filmmaking techniques employed here that middle schoolers learn in their summer movie classes offered at community colleges. So one of those middle schoolers probably made this video. (Natch, we don't know who directed the clip, but it obviously didn't cost a whole lot.) Anyway, thanks to Stereogum for premiering it. Enjoy!

On The Blog Reel: Dent May, Jeremy Jay, Marissa Nadler

Featured:
DENT MAY "Meet Me In The Garden"
JEREMY JAY "Lite Beam"
MARISSA NADLER "River Of Dirt"

We're pretty much a sucker for anything Dent May does, so it's no surprise that the Mississippi trailer park troubadour's newest video for "Meet Me In The Garden" has us floored. The Jon Leone-helmed video for the Good Feeling... standout, which premieres today via Pitchfork TV, is a trip. In it, May parades around in vintage Elton glasses, kicks back with a bottle of bubbly and devilishly croons in a bathtub. Mysterious, low-budget and just a little flamboyant, this should definitely earn our Artist To Watch a few more fans in '09.

Tuesday's Recommended Releases
As we move into February, good records are going to be flying at you fast and you might not catch 'em all, so we'll do our best to tip you off to the good shit you may not find right away. Our featured release today comes from the lovely Alela Diane. Although this is an iTunes only exclusive at this point, she has some great placement on the site and is the free iTunes download this week. Her album To Be Still is a gorgeous, wintry record highlighting her amazing voice and songwriting. Rough Trade releases the record to all outlets on February 17. Also released this week are fantastic records from a slew of Stark Favorites:
Pains of Being Pure at Heart: s/t (Slumberland)
"Everything with You" - mp3
Recalling the best aspects of late 80s and early 90s rock, POBPAH give us a record filled with perfect melodies, gauzy guitars, overdrive and timeless songwriting.
Dent May: The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele (Paw Tracks)
Meet Me in the Garden - mp3
Dent May offers up a truly good-feeling record with his witty quips on local drunks, dance parties and academic conferences; all the while being backed by catchy-ass instrumentation and his charming croon.
Heartless Bastards: The Mountain (Fat Possum)
"The Mountain" - mp3
Another great rock record from the Heartless Bastards, stocked with Kim Deal quality songs and flawless vocal and instrumental execution.
Benjy Ferree: Come Back to the Five and Dime Bobby Dee Bobby Dee (Domino)
Following up on his excellent record Leaving the Nest Benjy continues to deliver well-crafted rock songs written with a singer-songwriter mentality. Come Back finds Ferree dipping into the Bowie influences more heavily, and trust us, that's not a bad thing.
Phosphorescent: To Willie (Dead Oceans)
Reasons to Quit - mp3
Matthew Houck's tribute record to Willie, modeled after Willie's tribute record to Lefty. With Houck's voice and Willie's tunes, To Willie is a guaranteed pleasure trip, even if it's not breaking any new or stylistic barriers.

Matt's Artists to Watch 2009
So we're already a few weeks into January and the first major release dates are quickly approaching. There is already building buzz for a packed release schedule featuring albums from some of the biggest names in indie rock, and also some stellar records from some of music's lesser known names. In the first half of the year, records are due from Grizzly Bear, Lily Allen, Animal Collective, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird and M.Ward. Yet, there are formidable challenges to these larger releases in the form of gems from Bosque Brown, The Soft Pack, Girls, Alela Diane, Here We Go Magic, Wavves, Fan Death, Little Boots, Ida Maria, and my current favorite Harlem. While the great records we've heard (and not heard yet) are almost too much to absorb - here are three artists with upcoming records that should not be missed. Andrew and Vince's picks are coming next week. Mine are after the jump.
Scroll down for mp3s
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - s/t (Slumberland February, 3)Not matter what the buzz, how great a band looks, where they come from, what label they are on, or who their friends are, it all comes down to great songs. In the most simple terms, that is where the Pains of Being Pure at Heart excel. POBPAH are able to craft perfect 3 minute pop songs drenched in gauzy distortion yet rooted in melody and played with the excitement and passion of a garage full of high school kids. This New York band mines their sound from 80s and 90s rock, successfully melding catchy acoustic guitar progressions with overdrive-laden electric guitar power chords. POBPAH have released a collection of highly acclaimed singles for labels such as Fortuna Pop!, Atomic Beat and Cloudberry. Slumberland will release The Pains of Being Pure at Heart on February 3. While it's easy to make comparisons to bands like My Bloody Valentine, POBPAH have produced a unique record compete with the quality and staying power that assures them a place as one of the best new bands of 2009.
the bird and the bee - Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future (Blue Note, January 27)the bird and the bee are not new. They've already accumulated a decent modicum of success due to their self-titled debut released in 2007. Yet, their follow-up record Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future finds the LA duo finally stepping into their own. There was always something kitschy and sugary-sweet about tbatb. That was part of the appeal. Yet, their songs never really stayed with you. They were fleeting indulgences best consumed in small doses. Yet, all that has changed with their sophomore record. Greg Kurstin's production has never sounded better and Inara George's voice has more of an edge and purpose than ever before. After their debut and two so-so EPs, tbatb have finally delivered the full record critics and fans have been waiting for. The songs on Ray Guns, most notably the stand-out "Love Letter to Japan" (below), are driven by strong melodies and infectious instrumentation. tbatb sound more mature and self-assured in their music. This new record, coupled with the band's previous success bodes well for a very fruitful 2009.
Dent May - The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele (Paw Tracks February 9)It feels like Dent May has been around forever. His music seems so familiar, yet every time we listen, it's still as great as we remembered. There is an exuberance and joy in May's songs. He's not making any sweeping commentary in his lyrics, nor is he trying to alter the music spectrum with his instrumentation. His music is truly just good feeling music. Every one who listens is instantly a fan, that's the beauty of this record. You can play it anywhere for anyone. Dent May sings casually in a charming croon about drunks, dance parties, and girls. Imagine if Beirut took some Prozac and played at a spring BBQ and you can get a sense of Dent May's sound. May has the look and the attitude of someone who is bound to be a staple on the indie-rock scene of 2009. Discovered by Animal Collective in his home state of Mississippi, Dent May has signed to their Paw Tracks label. Clearly Dent May has the pedigree for success, but what's so refreshing is that his sound and record all justify the praise and buzz sure to come to him in 2009. He is hitting the road with New Pornographer AC Newman this winter.

Dent May - "Meet Me in the Garden" - mp3We love Dent May and his new record, but you already know that don't you? What you might NOT know is that we also love A.C. Newman -- that great songwriter with the red hair from the New Pornographers. Newman has a new record coming, Get Guilty on Jan. 20 via Matador. Dent May's record The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele comes out Feb. 3 on Paw Tracks. Watch a great video for Dent May's tune "Oh Paris", and check out the A.C. Track one: Dent May welcomes you to his record. There are peaceful background harmonies, and Dent May seems happy. He sings a little tune. He is amazing.
The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele will ‘meet you in the garden,’ greet you at a dance party, wake you up in the morning, caress and cleanse you in the shower. It works everywhere. It’s tropical. It’s loungey. There are many many hooks. Girls and boys can both like it.
They say the band Animal Collective discovered Dent May in Mississippi. He wrote a song about one-man band named Howard from that state. His song is the best on the album. Dent May knows college kids who have hung around in townie bars. You know, those college kids who never leave. Or do anything. Ever. Dent May plays the Ukulele. Sometimes, all the time, it sounds lovely.
On this record, the band plays tambourines, drums and trombones. They sing shoo-be dooby, shoo-be dooby. Dent May sings like he’s not sure if he’s serious. But most of the time it doesn’t matter. He thinks he’s an alcoholic. That doesn’t matter either. Dent May is invincible. The band knows best and stays out of his way.
Dent May can probably score chicks, but he sounds lonely and blue. All he wants is to start dance parties with girls. He refuses to believe people don’t want get down. We want to go to his parties. You can’t force a dance party. Dent May sings about this universal fact. Dent May is also over being sober.
The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele isn’t available to most people until February 2009. We are lucky to have it. One day, you will be lucky too. Dent May won’t change the course of music history. Dent May will make you happy. He wants you to hang out with your friends. You will. Make sure you share Dent May’s music with them. You will then grab them and start dancing. You won’t have to force it. We promise. Dent May, will love you for all time.

November 4, 2008 - Election Day
We, the Stark writers, intrupt your regular coverage to encourage all of our US readers to vote. For Barack Obama -- especially our Pennsylvania readers. We need all of you Bethlehem, PA folks on our side here. For our UK friends, we know you're all on our team as well.
When we return, look out for coverage from our recent trip to Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble, the amazing new record from Dent May, and an intimate show with McCarthy Trenching. We also weigh in on some larger records including the new Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams releases. We'll also take a second look at Ponytail via their most recent Halloween show in Brooklyn. Until then...
Vote hard, vote often.

CMJ Watch: Beach House, Dent May, Fight Bite, Bell
Dent May - "Meet Me in the Garden" - mp3
Finding a loaded showcase can make a night on the streets of CMJ much easier. It eliminates all the running around, half drunk and tired trying to find your way to the next show. That being said, here are two showcases where you could sit all night and relax. We know you won't - but you COULD.
The first is the Paw Tracks/Car Park/Force Field PR showcase at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night (10/22). Highlights here are definitely new-comer Dent May and Beach House. Paw Tracks will release May's debut The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele February 2. Apparently he recorded this in a trailer in his home town of Taylor, Mississippi. Yeah, it's a bit of a wait, but his Serge Gainsbourg-inspired tropicalia is certainly worth it. Definitely one to watch for in 2009.
Fite Bite "The Accident" - mp3
That brings us to a loaded Thursday evening (10/23) at Pianos for the Force Field PR showcase featuring Stark favorite Fight Bite, as well as Bell, Crystal Stilts, and Stars Like Fleas. Like we said, you could easily saddle up at Pianos for the entire evening. Texas duo Fight Bite's debut album Emerald Eyes is due October 28th. Emerald Eyes is filled with gauzy synths, lovely reverb-drenched vocals, and melancholy overtones. Put it on the list.

Buckle Up for CMJ 2008
It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous, music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.)Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky.
From Nashville to Chicago to NYC, Stark has highlighted a few performers we hope to see (won't be able to see 'em all.)
- Caitlin Rose - Ezra Furman - De Novo Dahl - Gang Gang Dance - Lykke Li - Deerhoof - Crystal Castles - mr. Gnome - Sam Champion - Wye Oak - Chairlift - Beach House - Death Vessel - Dent May- Marissa Nadler and tons more.
Full CMJ line up after the jump. Selected concert times to come.
