Lucero Announces Women & Work Tour 2012

We're extremely excited about the announcement of Lucero's new record and debut for ATO Women & Work due this March - supported by a massive tour. Supporters include J. Roddy Walston and William Elliot Whitmore, and the tour includes a co-headline with Built to Spill. Dates after the jump. Of the new album Ben Nichols says: "This record is Lucero doing what we do best. It's one part barrelhouse Rock & Roll and one part lonesome nights. The thing is, we are having more fun than ever playing both on stage and off and I think that shows on this album."

Youth Lagoon Comes to NYC 11/14-11/15

Brimming from his recent Pitchfork Best New Music title, twenty-two year old Trevor Powers (a.k.a. Youth Lagoon) has created the perfect record in The Year of Hibernation. What is perfect about it? Well, there is nothing groundbreaking happening here sonically, musically or lyrically. What makes this record perfect is its ability to linger in your speakers while your head is somewhere else. This is a cover-to-cover record where individually, each song is forgotten as quick as it plays, but as a collective, it has staying power. Powers has more in him beyond this record; it is an amazing start. Granted a self-induced career suicide of epic proportions, Powers has the ability to churn out record after record building upon what he has done with Hibernation. His ear for melody and his ghostly lyrical style make elevate his music to an artistic level, like a brush stroke.

We are looking to see how this record translates live and will be in attandance at one of his two NYC shows at Mercury Lounge in November.

Fleet Foxes Detail New Album + Free Download & Tour Dates

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues by subpop

It seems like ages since the Fleet Foxes released their self-titled debut record...well I guess it was 2008. A band can afford to take an approximate three year recording and touring hiatus after dropping such a perfect album. The wait is over as the Foxes just announced the release of their sophomore record, Helplessness Blues which comes to us on May 3rd (I know...a long wait.)
In order to sufficiently whet our musical appetites, enjoy the new title track, "Helplessness Blues" above. This sounds like a promising start.

In addition, the band have announced a slew of North American and European tour dates beginning in April. Full dates after the jump.

Chris Glover is Penguin Prison, a band we have been following from some time now, found through our good friends at Neon Gold Records and @thedavecarlson. Besides having a great logo, this band has gumption, good beats, hooky choruses and are fantastic live. We have been waiting in anticipation for their debut record and the video above for "Golden Train" puts us one step closer. Penguin Prison has been a Band to Watch in 2011 in Stark's eyes for sometime now. Go get it.

Delete Blog? No. Just Tallest Man Tour Dates

Weird. Amid the snow storm which attributed to a half day of work and one of the nicer commutes I have had in a few NYC months, "Burden of Tomorrow" off the Tallest Man on Earth's newest record, The Wild Hunt (due April 13 via Secretly Canadian) hit my speakers. Fuck run on sentences, we are Stark Online (maybe soon to be .net or .com?) Before we go off on that tangent, let's touch on our undying love for Kristian Matsson, a.k.a The Tallest Man on Earth.

His new record is full of buoyant, pop-sensible tunes, that showcase his amazing guitar talent while at the same time, mask it behind beautifully written strumming patterns; it's a procon (hybrid of PRO and CON). His lyrics continue to impress with endless nods to Dylan, Cohen and more. His vocals are unmatched -- he roars in tune like a musically trained, caged animal might. On the whole, the album is well-paced sounding at times, like a runaway train, and at others, like how one might imagine a vast, Midwestern landscape might sound; pitcture a Bob Ross painting singing to you. Done.

Insert tangent here: Yes. The rumors are true. MP3s may attribute to the deletion of your blog. Brooklyn shut-in's, vegans and Julie from "Julie and Julia" alike are running for the hills taking refuge behind Godaddy.com domains and other scary options; we've heard great things about WordPress, but can you transfer two and a half years of stark, snark, sweat and tears to Wordpress? Me thinks not.

Justin Townes Earle: New Track, Best Dressed, Tour Dates

Justin Townes Earle and Dawn Landes - "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind"

Justin Townes Earle is a busy man; aside from rubbing elbows with us Starkians in the East Village, frequenting our local haunts like a...local, he just released a new track titled "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind", was named one of GQ's Top 25 Best Dressed Men, and is embarking on a nice string of 2010 tour dates with Dawn Landes, Joe Pug and Carrie Rodriguez. Phew. Justin will be coming to Bowery on March 5 and we are going to do our best to make it out! This new track from JTE is a slight departure from some of his more ballad-driven musical pursuits; lyrically this song is about love-loss, but the tune bounces, and jaunts with joyousness. On Wednesday, JTE will play Nashville's Mercy Lounge with not only Dawn Landes, but local songstress and close Stark friend, Caitlin Rose.  Very exciting.

On a side note, we just updated our posting format here on Blog Spot and wanted to take this time to say it is F-ING AMAZING. Thank you for simplifying our lives. Saves me about five minutes a post.

JJ Releases New Track from jj nº 3 - "Let Go"

What is a JJ? What does a JJ look like? Is anybody listening to me? Managing to stay completely out of the lime light while at the same time, full immersed in it, JJ has become a symbol of "jaunty optimism" and debonair-like, summer-tinged, musical charm. jj nº 2 slowly made its way to the blogs, then our iPods and soon enough, emerged as the best record of 2009 (this coming from me, Vince.) What does this JJ have in-store for us in 2010? jj nº 3 which drops on March 9 via Secretly Canadian, the first track released above, "Let Go" and a smash tour to-boot. For the sake of my co-editors, I will not speak on the XX (whom JJ shares a bill with on most tour dates,) but will say that a JJ/Delorean concert for this blogger, would be better than Passion Pit on Ecstasy -- count it.

Deer Tick Announces iTunes Exclusive EP

December 1 marks the release of Deer Tick's iTunes-exclusive EP, More Fuel for the Fire -- it also marks my, Vince's, birthday. Well how about that. This aptly-titled release from DT comes as his fall tour with Neko Case ends. More Fuel for the Fire is the icing on the cake that is 2009 for Deer Tick -- a year that felt more like a setup for 2010, than a major release year. We know Born on Flag Day came out back in June, but it tasted like mild Newman's Own salsa, not a Cemita Milanesa -- we wanted a Cemita.

Justin Townes Earle: 2010 Headling Tour Dates

Hey, we saw Justin Townes Earle (name must be written in full) a few months ago parading around the East Village with Jason Isbell (formerly of the Drive By Truckers.) He looked like the above song "Mama's Eyes" sounds -- dark and raw. One of our many motos here at Stark is "that's what we expect out of our artists --" not to be too sadistic, but we want our favorites to be drunks, disturbed, do drugs, have promiscuous sex, over extend their welcomes (insert Wild Yaks' drummer at After The Jump here) -- it just makes things more interesting and real. Regardless, we know it's not "healthy," but neither are our lives. So it goes. Justin Townes Earle's most recent release, Midnight at the Movies, continues to impress and back in September won him "Emerging Artist to Watch" at September's Americana Music Awards. Go forth Justin.

Real Estate's Debut LP for Woodsist + Fall Dates

Real Estate is a Stark-semi-fuzzed-out-summer-favorite. One the most memorable forays into the band's live show came underneath the JMZ subway at the Todd P-sponsored, DIY, stripped-down show highlighting the bands of the Woodsist label. We wrote about our drunken musical escapades and our shear enjoyment of Real Estate, a band that truly stood out in that hot Summer haze. Now, the band is readying the release of their self-titled debut LP for the Woodsist label which drops on Nov. 17. As usual, a full fall tour has been set. If you aren't following Dent May on Twitter you should be. It's a nice stream of consciousness, lately pertaining to his travels in Europe. He allows you to live vicariously through his 140-character posts touching on everything from illness, late nights, scenic views and run-ins with local police. Also, don't ask us why, but we at Stark have a not-so-secret affinity for HOWARD! Dent May's music is so light and airy that his songs make clouds and cocktails disappear. Next thing you know, you are drunk and staring at a bright pink beer Koosie that says 'I'm an alcoholic' on the side, and you immediately remember why you love this band.

Regardless, his live performance is not to be missed, especially being that his upcoming tour finds him sharing bills with the The Fiery Furnaces among others.

Both bands are insane in the membrane live, but together, they're Ron-stoppable. Actually, as a longtime giant fanboy of both these bands, I'm :( that the Manchester dudes won't be on the Philly show. Anyway, there are lots of exciting things going on in both bands' camps. You've already seen me gush my brains out over Manchester's Mean Everything to Nothing. I called it the best album of 2009 back in March. I realize that was kinda premature, but it's still a definite top fiver in September. They've got a new single to ride called "Shake It Out," and if it brings them half the success on rock radio that "I've Got Friends" did - it peaked at No. 8 two weeks ago - then these guys will have had a hell of a year.

You haven't seen me gush my brains out over Brand New very much throughout the history of this blog, but that's because this blog is barely two years old and the 'Newbies haven't released a record - or done much of anything - since '06. So, sorry for the lack of gushing. But Brand New means more to me than just about any other band on this planet, so expect THE MOST GUSHING around these parts over the next few weeks, because OMGZ NEW RECORD HYSTERIA !!111!!1. Daisy hits stores Sept. 22. It will be brilliant, because Brand New has a brilliant track record and completely sheds its skin every three years. Evolution, you guys. This San Fransisco septet peel away their West coast facade, reveling an alt-country underbelly equipped with punchy vocal harmonies, steel string tinges and acoustic jangles. Following 2007's Light Poles and Pines, Or, the Whale are set to release their interestingly self-titled sophomore release on Sept. 22 via the newly establish Seany Record label.

Here's to Wavves, hopefully turning over a new leaf, post-Primavera meltdown. The above video for "No Hope Kids" was shot by Pete Ohs who has worked with the likes of Arcade Fire, Au Revior Simone, and the Fiery Furnaces. In addition to the mp3 and video, Wavves has announced three US tour dates, one of which is at Bowery Ballroom July 15. See for yourself below. The man is still generating buzz and press. Blitzen Trapper: New EP and Tour Dates

Our Furr-y, Blizten Trapper are ready to follow up their successful 2008 with a, hopefully successful 2009; to kick it off, a new EP, Black River Killer EP, which drops via Sub Pop on Aug.24. In true industry fashion, the band will then pack-up and ship- ut on a conglomeration of US tour dates. Go See Tori Amos If You're Into It

Tori Amos, whose eternally youthful appearance and demeanor suggests a much younger person than 45 years old, has a new album out next week called Abnormally Attracted to Sin. We're not particularly attracted to Tori Amos, abnormally or otherwise, but we can still roll with the redhead any day. She's been doing her thing for pretty much the longest time ever and has managed to find commercial success while retaining artistic freedom. Good for her. She begins a full U.S. tour in Seattle on July 10th, and ends up in Boston on August 17th. All the 'tweener dates after the jump.
