John Wizards

Any new sounds these days outside of the increasingly tired litany of beat-driven pop and gurgling electronics are met with immediate attention at Stark. Enter a sleepless morning, a Pitchfork Rising feature and 25 year old South African John Withers - aka John Wizards. Withers songs - while rough and homemade are startling refreshing given our curent summer music landscape - at times reminding us of the first time we heard The Very Best. While it's hard not to make a reference to Vampire Weekend - it's important to note that when Withers sings of South African locations - he actually has been there, and lives there. There's not much on the internet right now - other than tracks at Pitchfork and a new EP next week, with an album to follow in Sept on Planet Mu Records. Kudos to Ryan Dombal and Pitchfork for really jumping on this one early.

Tomas Barford: "November Skies"

Vince directed our attention to this "Best New Track" on Pitchfork last week, and it was a good find. Danish-born, LA-based Tomas Barford deftly blends elements of The Field's melancholic melodies with a distinct ear towards glistening pop sensibilities. Check out his lovely video for "Broken Glass" below, and pick up Salton Sea, out now.

New Video: The Very Best - Yoshua Alikuti

After releasing their latest mixtape, Super Mom, The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya and producer Johan Hugo a.k.a Radioclit) are back for more, this time premiering a new track and video, on Pitchfork, plus announcing their newest album, MTMTMK out July 17 on Moshi Moshi. Dig their new video for "Yoshua Alikuti" above. This is starting to sound like a more mature Esau, but still keeping within his Malawi roots. While not as hook-laden as some of his previous efforts, we are HUGE Very Best supporters and can't wait to hear more from this record. In the meantime, check out this interview we did with him a while back. Yeah, we are best friends now.

New Video: Grimes - "Oblivion"

Check out this new video from buzz-laden artist, Grimes whose latest release, Visions was a Pitchfork Best New Music winner. Dig "Oblivion" above, a clear standout track from this somewhat front-loaded record.

AlunaGeorge - "You Know You Like It"

We came across this, as we're sure most of you did, via P4K this AM...we at Stark have had an expanded and seasoned musical palate, since our inception, or birth if you will. Jazz, rock, alt-country, country, indie-rock, electro-pop, you name it, we like it. Which brings us to the UK's AlunaGeorge, whom, as mentioned by P4K, have managed to create an amazing track in "You Know You Like It", but have somehow missed the US spotlight, or any spotlight for that matter, thus far. Well, that is clearly about to change. Dig this video and more importantly, this track. So, we at Stark continue down the recent path of championing electro-backed R&B jams (see Jessie Ware) and you know what, we like it.

New Saint Etienne "Tonight"

Admittedly, we missed Saint Etienne in their prime (not our fault) - but have reaped the benefits of their amazing catalog due to the recent re-issues and crate digging through various "used" piles. Luckily, we have a taste of new music from them for the fist time in 7 years. Via P4K:

St. Etienne's Bob Stanley (who has contributed to Pitchfork) says the track is "about the anticipation of going to see your favourite artist. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life. People talk about the problem of landfill indie, but there's so much landfill pop around at the moment - we're trying to do something about it."

The Very Best -- New Mixtape! Super Mom

Yes. Just in time for Summer. Esau Mwamwaya and Johan Karlberg (a.k.a. Radioclit, no without Etienne Tron) are The Very Best. After releasing their first free mixtape in 2008, the duo dropped Warm Heart of Africa to much critical acclaim. Now, the two ready the release of a new mixtape, Super Mom, dropping on May 8th. You can download it for FREE HERE. The music is pure excitement and happiness, full of sun-drenched central-African rhythms, beats and sytles. There is no denying our sheer enjoyment of everything these two produce. It is clear, that Esau and Etienne have one clear goal when making music...to make people happy. We were able to catch up with Easu back in 2009 -- check out the interview here. We also had the pleasure of chatting with Radioclit and Esau at the Fader Fort during this year's CMJ. Can't get enough.

Holy Ghost "Do It Again"

Honestly, there's not a ton to know here, not much convincing to be done, facts to reiterate or flashy writing to get you to listen to the above track from DFA's Holy Ghost (April 12 release). We assume this is what Altered Zones would call a "banger." Holy Ghost's dance-floor ready hooks are universal and ubiquitous. It's impossible not to make early LCD comparisons (given they are on James Murphy's label) - but there is an edginess and disco slap that help Holy Ghost transcend simple electro-dance labels and bring them into a realm of their own. So, there was a big snafu over this video this morning. According to the ever reliable Twitter, Pitchfork was promised the exclusive on the new video for Twin Sister's excellent track "All Around and Away We Go" but someone in the Twin Sister camp made the video live on Vimeo this morning. Gorilla vs. Bear, being an astute (almost creepily so) follower of Twin Sister, found the vid and posted it. In the internet battle of who could [really] care less, we side with GVB. Fault lies with the band's management, producer, publicist, or the band themselves for the fuck up. Justice is served. Sorry about the Ben Folds Five reference. Now enjoy the tune and video dammit!

Behold the new single "Never Follow Suite" from The Radio Dept.'s third album to-date, Clinging to a Scheme. Recently bequeathed with Pitchfork's coveted, Best New Music title, The Radio Dept. have found a happy, cohesive medium with this release. Labeled as "sun-soaked," "ambient," and "hypnotic," Clinging works well in headphones and even better on a nice breezy day, where nothing is the only thing on the day's agenda.

The Antlers: "Kettering"

What's it been, a few weeks since we posted something on our favorite band of '09 The Antlers? Ok, here you go. This video exclusive for Pitchfork, is a testament to the nuance and maturity the trio has acquired since touring constantly in 2009 behind their break-out record Hospice. This is a group that went from a simple guitar driven rock band of sorts, to a full on musical collective.

The blog world has rightfully been in a frenzy on the back of the announcement of a new record from the excellent Canadian artists Caribou. Swim comes out April 20th on Merge. Caribou's previous effort, Polaris Prize winning Andorra, took us all by surprise with its winning mix of psych, rock, pop, and electronica. All signs are pointing to the fact that another gem is heading down the line with Swim; certainly one of the most anticipated indie rock records of 2010 (and a lock for best new music status). P4k debuted the video for the standout single "Odessa" this morning. Someone should start an official gambling site handicapping Pitchfork reviews. Anyone? Cover art and tracklist after the jump.

#1 Music Video of the 2000s?

Love them or hate them, Pitchfork's decade in review, most notably their top 500 songs of the decade, has been heavily debated around the blogosphere. Today, we get their top 50 videos of the 2000s. Of course, their top 10 is going to inspire even more heated discussion. Pitchfork's #1 choice, the White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl" holds a special place for me, as I remember watching this video on my 10 inch TV during my freshman year of college and being stopped dead in my tracks. I had sort of started listening to the White Stripes at this point, but the amazing song and seizure inducing lego madness solidified me as a fan for the long haul, or at least until Get Behind Me Satan came along. While it probably wouldn't be #1 for me, it's pretty high up there. See after the jump for Pitchfork's top 10 videos of the decade.

New WHY? Album This Fall; Stoked City, Population: Us

P4k has an interview with WHY? frontman Yoni Wolf this morning, in which the musician reveals the details behind the trio's brand new album. Eskimo Snow is the title of the follow-up to last year's brilliant Alopecia, and it's expected to drop in the fall via Anticon. The band recorded the album during the Alopecia sessions, and was initially due for release before the Best Of 2008 opus. According to Wolf, the songs that make up Eskimo are "song-songs" - i.e., more conventional verse/chorus structures - and the record is the least hip-hop project he's ever been involved in. We're not fretting, though. Anything this band touches turns to gold. Check out the full interview here. 

Grizzly Gets 9.0

Come on! Like you didn't see it coming. Grizzly Bear's extremely buzzed about Veckatimest, which is reaching heights of Merriweather hype, just dropped a 9.0 on P4K and a Best New Music. Sometimes, it's just too easy. The album is out today, so do with it what you will.

We enjoyed a fantastic Memorial Day off, munching pizza, buying Vaselines (the band) and drinking grenade-size ginger ales at our favorite music watering hole, Other Music; it was the Veckatimest listening party (see previous post.) We had to.

Anyway, just an FYI because this shit is all you're going to read about for awhile. Thought we would alert you.

No Age Keeps Busy, New EP and More

L.A. noise-punkers No Age, specifically Randy Randall on guitar and Dean Spunt on vocals/drums, are not for lack of work. Aside from readying to embark on a massive tour with Deerhunter and Dan Deacon (dates T.B.A.), No Age is preparing to release a still-untitled EP on Sub Pop later this fall. Randall and Spunt are ready to record a follow up to last year's highly acclaimed Nouns, which found its way on to many a Best Of 2008 list -- i.e. Paste, Rolling Stone, GVB, Vince's and Matt's. It can't be easy for a singer songwriter in the folk genre. Every night in every town you have countless men and women slinging their songs with acoustic guitars and softly sung lyrics. Luckily for us, Brooklyn-based Sharon Van Etten has found her way out of the mire and into the eye of the press, receiving rave reviews (see our thoughts here) for her new album because I was in love, due May 9 on Language of Stone. Hew new video "For You" debuted on Pitchfork, no less. Yes, even they label her as a Cat Power disciple, but her songs and this video are a stark reminder that only a mass of talent and a good voice can propel one above the sea of open-mic-mediocrity. Van Etten is currently touring Europe with the equally great and underappreciated Great Lake Swimmers.
