New Caitlin Rose: "I Was Cruel"

We gave you the first taste of Caitlin Rose's new album - The Stand In (March 5 ATO) - a few weeks back with "No One to Call." Today we get the gorgeous and striking pseudo-ballad "I Was Cruel" a Deep Vibration cover (who are excellent in their own right). Rose told Spin: "This album could be considered my first attempt at a high kick," she says. "We're not aiming to make indie-sounding records. How boring would that be?" Caitlin Rose plays NY's The Mercury Lounge April 1. Full tour after the jump.

Daniel Romano: "Middle Child"

To continue our 2 post Caitlin Rose theme, Ms. Rose turned us on to the fantastic writing of Daniel Romano several months ago. Continuing in the somewhat odd tradition of Canadians composing excellent Americana music, Romano channels vintage Parsons and Gene Clark, and in-turn (of course) Sweetheart-era Byrds. With a melancholic deadpan vocal and stellar production, Romano captures the elusive sadness of true country all the while remembering to always keep that pedal steel and fiddle uplifting, no matter how dire the lyric. A true standout writer. Come Cry with Me comes out Jan 22 on Normaltown Records, an imprint of New West.

Caitlin Rose Announces New Album

Exciting news today, as longtime Stark favorite Caitlin Rose announces her new album The Stand-In Feb 25 via Names Records (in the UK). The new record will be released on March 5th in the States via ATO and we very much welcome the new track, "No One To Call" below. Featuring Rose's signature vocal, "No One To Call" recalls the best of More Adventurous era Rilo Kiley intertwined with the warm glowing instrumentation and harmonies of the classic 70s-era Rondstandt anyone who follows her social media knows she loves so well. Great to hear new stuff from Ms. Rose. Tracklist after the jump.

Little Bandit: "Heaven or Hell"

Everyone in Nashville knows each other, and they're all in (good) bands. You may recognize a lot of familiar faces in the above photo montage, from Tristen to Caitlin Rose, to Ponychase and more. Little Bandit is the new band from Alex Caress, younger brother of Jordan, who fronts Ponychase (a new addiction) and held down the rhythm section in Tristen's band on numerous tours and recordings. We're getting a heavy Dawes vibe, with touches of Sweetheart-era Byrds, and of course, a little Gram on the side. All that in addition to some rad beards and solid songwriting make Little Bandit a band to watch out for. Their self-titled Debut EP is out now.

Introducing Daniel Romano

Daniel Romano: "Time Forgot (To Change My Heart)"

Thanks to American Songwriter and Caitlin Rose for turning us on to the crystal-voiced Ontario native Daniel Romano. Distilling equal parts Sweetheart of the Rodeo with baritone country-noir along the lines of Neko Case or Lee Hazlewood - Romano in one sitting has turned our heads, and lead us to his most recent release Sleep Beneath the Willow which we're here spinning and soaking in on a languid July 5th in New York City. Can't wait to dig deeper.

What can't Caitlin Rose do? After releasing her debut record earlier this year, Own Side Now, Rose took the UK by storm ruffling feathers at NME, BBC and Q Magazine. Shortly thereafter, she returned to the states garnering album reviews from the New York Times, NPR, LA Weekly and more. Doing what a good young artist does best, Rose kept to the road spreading her crystalline voice, cheekily-creative lyrics and southern charm. This Nashville-native was making friends in the right places; ultimately those friendships landed her a record deal with ATO Records. Home, or former home, to such artists as Drive By Truckers, Dawes, My Morning Jacket and Gomez, ATO will add a much needed stiff-label backing to Rose's exponential career path. Soon to join the likes of Justin Townes Earle/Jason Isbell and Hayes Carll on a Fall tour, Rose is poised and positioned for continued success; keep your eye on her...we have for the past four years and it is paying off.

Down On The Bikini Line

The world is a better place for having Jonny Corndawg in it. Before we even got a glimpse of his excellent new album Down on the Bikini Line (coming out 8/30 on Thirty Tigers) we heard tales of the wit, friendliness, humor and generosity that accompanied Corndawg's crisp songwriting style and homages to past country music greats. After purchasing some of his amazing hand-crafted leather products (BUY THEM) and hearing an advance of the record, we were full converts.

Corndawg, without lapsing into cheesy ironic tropes, manages to remind us all to not take ourselves so seriously all the time. Music can be quality, while still being fun an uplifting. Not everything needs to consist of found VHS analog footage spliced with arty black and white vignettes and dark minor key melodies. Moreover, Country music has a long history of humor in its catalog. While nodding to the likes of George Jones and Waylon Jennings, Jonny Corndawg keeps his sound current and relevant - writing tight tunes with lyrics like "when a Ford man turns to Chevy, an angel gets its wings." Not sure whether this is new, or just new to us. Caught it on Twitter this AM. Either way, it's great and we wanted to share. Here Caitlin Rose covers JD Souther's timeless "Faithless Love" popularized by Rose idol Linda Ronstadt on her '74 classic Heart Like a Wheel. Love it. Rose's excellent debut album Own Side Now is out now on Theory 8 Records. 2 New York shows! You already know how much we love her upcoming album... Tour dates including SXSW after the jump.

NASHVILLE, TN – Caitlin Rose will kick off her US tour in Austin during SXSW, followed by eleven dates opening for Ron Sexsmith and then off of Australia for some dates with The Felice Brothers. Upon return, Caitlin will continue her US tour with sixteen dates opening for Johnny Flynn.

Rose’s full-length debut, Own Side Now, will be released on March 15, 2011 on Theory 8 Records with marketing and distribution provided by Thirty Tigers/RED. Rose co-produced the record with Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Will Oldham & Andrew Bird) & Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle).

Caitlin Rose has been a staple on this blog since its inception. We have shared live reviews, videos, Daytrotter Sessions and much more. Ms. Rose's career has been a joy to watch and it is now very quickly culminating in the release of her debut LP, Our Own Side -- US release date still TBA; she is currently touring in the UK. The video above is for a standout track from the new record titled, "Shanghai Cigarettes" and let's just say it came along way from THIS. We're excited that Ms. Rose was able to hunker down and finish what we know, was a long and meticulous record writing/recording process. This song does the body good and we look forward to Caitlin's state-side release and hopefully, a great tour to follow (NYC please.). Play the above on repeat and all will be right with the world. Daytrotter Welcomes Caitlin Rose

It has been awhile since we waxed positive about one of our favorite Nashville songstresses, Caitlin Rose. Recently added to the bill at Austin City Limits, Ms. Rose has quickly made a name for herself in her hometown playing with a revolving door of fantastic musicians such as Justin Townes Earle (flood victim relief concert) Jordan Caress (who supports her on this Daytrotter session - what up Jordan!) And the Relatives, Johnny Corndawg, Bowerbirds, Tristen (!) and more. Her draw is beginning to spread like wildfire across the pond as well with features by the Gaurdian, Gods in the TV among others.

In most her recent bout of limelight harnessing, Ms. Rose performed four tunes on the always intimate and fantastically produced, Daytrotter Sessions. Her full length is due at the end of August! Until then, grab the fantastic Dead Flowers EP. Happy long weekend all.

For those of you keeping track, we somehow held off posting about Caitlin Rose since July 14. Recently featured on the cover of the Nashville Scene, Caitlin (known affectionately to some as Cato) joined local female artists Tristen and Those Darlins as they were profiled in an amazing feature by Scenester Tracy Moore (Holla!) -- a must read article for those interested in the fantastically talented and interwoven Nashville music underground.

Caitlin has been working hard to get her debut full-length off the ground (not yet given a street date,) but, no need, her EP Dead Flowers has not faded over time. In a YouTube exclusive, Caitlin performs a new tune off her upcoming LP titled, "Shanghai Cigerettes."

*Quality, not the best, but deal. It's nice music! Last night, Nashville went back in time. Not with Doc, but with host Nashville Cream -- radio promo done by Out the Other. Caitlin Rose, Tristen, And the Relatives, Turbo Fruits and other local bands took to the stage at Mercy Lounge performing some of the 70s greatest hits. Gotta love it. Today, we are trying to keep it vintage, but this is the blog world, so you know we won't. We received some lo-fi Flip videos from a friend at Theory 8 Records and management. Videos include covers of Linda Ronstadt's "Love Has No Pride" and Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me" performed by Caitlin Rose with band backing by And the Relatives and guest vocals by Tristen. All our favorites in one place.

As the days wear on, one giving away to another, senses heighten, ears perk, and anticipation mounts as we are now on Showcase Countdown Day: 4. We at Stark enjoy one word, two syllable artist names: Jaymay, Xylos and subject two: Tristen .

From the Windy City, to the underbelly of Nashville, Tristen (Gaspadarek) has been polishing her pop roots with country dirt. Music City is a haven for starving songwriters, creative minds, string ticklers, finger pickers, country heroines, whiskey, beer and bad decisions. While Tristen dabbles in a few of the above, her songs evoke a timeless quality built upon fluid songwriting.

Joining forces with local musicians and best friend Larissa Maestro (a graduate of Berkley and a cellist) Tristen has found what she left home for: a cohesive sound strengthened only by her resolve, powerful voice and hook-laden song structures.

She has a day job waiting tables, but like most in Nashville, the dream outweighs reality. More on Tristen after the jump Including album details and tour dates.


Aside from her appearance at the Stark/Jinners showcase (6/13), Tristen will be playing in NY at the Lakeside Lounge on the 17th before traveling to Ithaca and Boston for 3 more shows.

Tristen has just put the finishing touches on a tour EP comprised of songs taken from her upcoming LP Charlatans of the Garden Gate that she is recording in Nashville with producer Jeremy Ferguson. The tour EP is handmade with care and can be purchased at her live shows exclusively. Tristen is part of a budding musical scene growing out of Nashville at the moment. Along with local favorites such as And The Relatives and Caitlin Rose Tristen has begun to gain solid backing from the press and is bringing her music to the people on an increasingly national scale. "Matchstick Murder" is being used in Five Star Day, a film which will be premiering at the Toronto film festival. Tristen is hoping to make the trip over the boarder for some dates there coming up later in 2009.

For now though, Tristen is focusing on finishing Charlatans, booking an upcoming Southeastern US tour, and of course, getting ready to play our Northside showcase.

We are glad to see them all in one place putting their various musical talents on display. And the Relatives recently released their newest EP, Animals which is available on iTunes and the usual spots. Tristen is getting ready for a Northeast tour and has handmade EPs available at her live shows. And Caitlin is in the process for finishing her debut full-length.

"Yesterday I hit 6th and Red River (where it all happens) with only a moderate agenda and scored big with some great "day party" sets. Here are some highlights:

Caitlin Rose and Vetiver at the Austinist/BMI Party at Mohawk:
Caitlin Rose::
Caitlin Rose is a stone faced killer. She mercilessly launched charm bullets all over the mid-afternoon beer swiggers. Those that may have thought "ehh solo acoustic artists ehh" all got a reminder that when songs are really good, it doesn't much matter how they are accompanied. A particular highlight was "Answer in One of These Bottles," which has all the melody and wit I want in a country tune. The crowd joined in one the final chorus willingly.

Vetiver::
Vetiver's set was like sitting in a bath tub at just the right temperature with about a half a bottle of wine. Ya know that feeling where you don't actually know how long you will stay in one particular spot, but you have absolutely no intention of moving? Their songs are lean and satisfying with a lush blend of tones (acoustic and electric guitars, Wurly, electric bass) that made the set feel, as Dostoyevsky first said, "All good." I couldn't exactly tell the origin of each sound, which is, I think, how both band and audience wanted it. In short, these guys killed it and I was pleased to soak it up until sufficiently pruney.

Wavves and Lake (Ha! They're both water) Forcefield PR/Terrorbird Party at Red7:
Wavves::
Wavves are a couple of devious little fuckers. Slipping in a set of deafening 2:30 p.m. punk rants under the cover of hipster costumes. Clever clever. Strip the crunch off the drums and the reverb off the vocals and the sound is a crisp slap in the face. In a good way, like washing your face with cold water.

Lake::
Fun songs + relaxed performance = a relaxed, fun crowd. Lake seems like one of those bands that plays up the "oh, we don't really know what we're doing" thing, but their cover is blown with their hooky writing and intelligent arrangements. Think warm Wurly tone with jangly-electric guitar, zappy synth and Meg White drum beats. They were clearly having fun, not just performing, and it certainly translated. "
