Bat For Lashes - "Pearl's Dream"

We've always kinda liked posting videos on Friday. It's like a fine send off into the weekend from some of your favorite bands. Today, our lead video is from Bat For Lashes. We know everyone already said how much they love her, but we've really been getting into the album of late. Don't know why it is finally resonating now after all these months, but hey - better now than never. Enjoy these tasty swaths of video goodness compiled from what was a pretty damn good week in the blogosphere. See everything after the jump...

Norway vs. Sunday?

We're glad to hear one of our favorite Norwegian acts is playing a few NY shows as part of a pretty huge tour. It gives us good occasion to revisit a great, but slept on record, I Was A King's self titled album that came out in March. Tara gave it a rave review a few months ago, but since then we haven't heard much about these folks. Guess what just made it back on the new release playlist? They have a show Saturday at Mercury Lounge and one Sunday at Union Hall. They will be joining The Constantines and Crystal Antlers next week for more dates. Check their myspace for the full run.

New Magnolia Electric Company Album

It was a good day yesterday. Just as our constant listening of Jason Molina's back catalog began to wear thin, he announced the release of the newest Magnolia Electric Company record "Josephine" coming out July 21st on Secretly Canadian. Josephine promises to pack a strong emotional punch as it is an attempt to capture the emotions of the band in the wake of the death of bassist Evan Farrell who tragically passed away in 2007. Molina has honed his songwriting craft and the band matches his maturity with their playing. Most songs clock in at under the 3 minute mark. Produced once again by Steve Albini, Josephine is this writer's most anticipated album of 2009. To get a sense of what the album will sound like, you can sample the title track above, but also be sure to pick up their newly released EP It's Made Me Cry.
Molina's concept album is an honest-to-God effort on the part of Magnolia Electric Co. to pay tribute to the life and spirit of fallen bassist Evan Farrell (R.I.P. December 2007). Molina said each tune is a good faith attempt to make real Evan's hopes for the record. And in doing so, Evan's spirit becomes part of the concept.

New WHY? Album This Fall; Stoked City, Population: Us

P4k has an interview with WHY? frontman Yoni Wolf this morning, in which the musician reveals the details behind the trio's brand new album. Eskimo Snow is the title of the follow-up to last year's brilliant Alopecia, and it's expected to drop in the fall via Anticon. The band recorded the album during the Alopecia sessions, and was initially due for release before the Best Of 2008 opus. According to Wolf, the songs that make up Eskimo are "song-songs" - i.e., more conventional verse/chorus structures - and the record is the least hip-hop project he's ever been involved in. We're not fretting, though. Anything this band touches turns to gold. Check out the full interview here.

Tour Alert: The Dodos

We have been following The Dodos since our blog's inception in early 2008. Visiter was one of those albums that when released, made us re-evaluate where modern music was heading; it was also one of the first album reviews we posted to the site aside from Andrew's Best Of list. There was some magical musical-hybrid occurring on that album, which was well, startling to us. These California natives are going to melt your face with some summery dates starting with the Northside Festival in Brooklyn coming up! They are playing on June 14 so there will be no conflict with our awesome line up at Cameo.

Check out global and US tour dates after the jump.

Kurt Vile Signs to Matador

Big up to Philly songwriter Kurt Vile who's had a pretty awesome 2009, and caps it off by inking a fresh deal with Matador records! Mexican Summer is great, but Matador marketing budgets are greater. Congrats! His amazing God is Saying This To You is out now and his follow up Childish Prodigy will be out this fall (on Matador, duh).

Vivian Girls Announcement

In news that will surely be all over the blog world today, The Vivian Girls announce the release of their sophmore album, Everything Will Be The Same on September 8th via In The Red. Blog comments sections still seem to be split over the fate and talent of this all girl trio after their, like, devestatingly pompous and obnoxious bathroom rant, but still they soldier on nonetheless (of course). From the PR.
On the first album, the two longest, slowest songs, "Tell the World" and "Where Do You Run To", were clear standouts. The band says they'll focus more on that side of their sound on the second album. "The songs are longer," says drummer Ali Koehler. "I think it's moodier. I think we have basically the same influences as on our first album, but with more influences added."

Drive By Truckers Offer Up B-Side Collection

Run and tell Ronnie and Neil that after I get my Blublockers, I will need this DBT compilation and my life will therefore be complete. Then I can die happy with John Henry.

DBT announced that the rarity/b-side collection titled, The Fine Print (A Collection of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008), will be available on Sept 1.

Get excited.

Tour Alert: Those Darlins, I NEED BLUBLOCKERS NOW!

I don't know what I am more excited for, the possibility of perhaps procuring myself a fresh pair of Blublocker sunglasses (Darlins' tour sponsors,) or that Those Darlins are hitting the road in support of their debut self-titled full-length (July 7 Thirty Tigers.) Cover art for the new album is pictured above. Probably the latter, but I love me some sunglasses. The Darlins screamed on to the scene after releasing the Wild Ones EP and are hooked up with some great dates coming down the line.

Tons 'O Tour Dates, Track List and Blublockers Rap after that jump...

New Tiny Vipers mp3

Sub Pop's Tiny Vipers return on July 7th with Life on Earth, the sophomore record from Seattle's Jesy Fortino. Her debut record Hands Across the Void got some solid support from critics including larger outlets such as NPR and Pitchfork, but failed to reach the wider audience it deserved. Tiny Vipers are not always for casual listening. The track times tend to extend past your usual 4 minute mark and the lyrics are deep and filled with imagery. Fortino's dark and subtle acoustic based songs transcend a simple "folk" label and create their own genre in and of itself. Her voice is the center piece, holding you captive as it shifts, floats and moves. Check out the lead track "Dreamer" above. Tiny Vipers play New York on June 26th at Le Poisson Rouge. We'll be at Roadside Graves though.

Dirty

Tip of the cap to Greg Regan for introducing us to the 1968 classic of a rock film, the bizarre acid trip that is The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus. The vid features lots of carnies, The Stones, 'Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithful, John and Yoko and a show stopping performance from The Who. In fact, the Who were SO good, The Rolling Stones management didn't even want to release the film, because they so upstaged the Stones' tired and lethargic performance. BUT here is a little morning shot for you. This is for you Winston. Thanks to Mike Bailey for directing us to the youtube clip. Play it loud. Dirty.

Zambri Tonight at Public Assembly - mp3

Last night, we had the pleasure to take in a kick ass show at the Mercury Lounge (The Dig, Those Dancing Days) with Jessica and Chris from the New York based group Zambri. We wrote about them last year during their string of dates with Does it Offend You, Yeah? and caught them during that run at the Bowery which was a damn fun evening. It was great to catch up with them. In the past year, Zambri has been working on new songs and playing dates. They just finished recording an EP and are looking ahead to recording a full length this year. Tonight they play at Public Assembly with NY dates coming up later this summer at Lit (Jun 26) and the Annex (Jul 16). Check out the cool lo-fi live video of "Let It Said" after the jump along with tonight's full line-up. Looking forward to hearing the EP soon fo' sure.

STARK & AQUARIUM DRUNKARD PRESENT: THE ROADSIDE GRAVES

JUNE 26th:
THE ROADSIDE GRAVES @
PIANOS
NEW YORK, NY

We're thrilled to join Aquarium Drunkard in presenting one of the best new bands to come out of New Jersey in the past few years, The Roadside Graves, as they celebrate the release of their third record My Son's Home coming out June 9th on Autumn Tone Records. We've been dedicated followers of this band since they released their fantastic and grossly overlooked last record No One Will Know Where You've Been. Interweaving elements of The Band, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt and a dose of Bruce Springsteen, The Roadside Graves manage to produce a unique and coherent sound, pulsing with the energy of their large ensemble and anchored by the gritty and melodic vocals of lead singer John Gleason. My Son's Home is an 18-song comprehensive tour of quality American music. Deftly moving from folk, to rock, to back-porch country, the Roadside Graves have produced one of the best roots-Americana records of the past five years, hands down. Click after the jump to see the full Piano's bill and the rest of the Roadside Graves' tour dates including a show opening up for another Stark fave Lucero.

Happy Birthday Levon!

Yes folks - today is the one and only Levon Helm's birthday. He's 69. Anyone who knows us knows how much we love Levon and his amazing cannon of work, so we're not even going to go into it. You can read our review from one of his Midnight Rambles HERE.

Levon is celebrating his 69th year with the release of Electric Dirt, another amazingly strong collection of vintage Americana songs. Electric Dirt expands the sonic palate from Helm's previous Grammy winning effort Dirt Farmer. Electric Dirt finds Helm drawing more upon his stellar horn section as well as on his chorus of back-up singers including daughter Amy Helm. While the back-up singers can at times sound grating (not sure why) - Electric Dirt's greater emphasis on the soul and R&B chapters of the Americana catalog succeeds for the most part. It's hard not to love everything that Levon touches, but we would have to give it to Dirt Farmer by a nose over Electric Dirt. Yet, for anyone familiar with Levon's work, in The Band or otherwise Electric Dirt is clearly a must buy. It comes out June 30th on Vanguard Records. Happy birthday Levon!

Rio En Medio Relaunch Frontier

Frontier
was that record we got, and liked a long time ago, but somehow got swept under the couch and pushed off the playlist by the constant influx of new music. We didn't really catch any Rio En Medio tour dates, didn't see their name around, or really hear much of anything from her camp after Frontier's initial release. Another sad casualty of an over-saturated market. BUT, Frontier lives again. Revived by Manimal Vinyl and a backed by a new publicist, Frontier will see widespread distribution with a new release date of July 14th. Rio En Medio also joins Brightblack Morning Light on 3 tour dates. See what we previously wrote about Frontier after the jump, along with cover art, video and tour dates!

Surely to be prematurely slapped with the "freak-folk" label, Rio en Medio deserves better than that. She is able to meld her folk-style-baritone-ukulele with darker electronic beats and sounds while successfully capturing ancient feels within the context of modern music. Rio en Medio, whose real name is Danielle Stech-Homsy, wrote this record in the the wintry climes of her rural New Mexican home -- going it alone Bon Iver style. Her vocal imagery is rooted in the poetry and literature she studied, while her music lays in a bed of dark synthesizers with her ukulele high in the mix. Certainly one to keep your eye out for this fall.

The Dig Tonight at Mercury Lounge

The Dig are slowly making their case as one of the buzziest unsigned bands in NYC. The new buzz maker and publicists' dream Deli Magazine named them "band of the month" and now The Dig are headlining The Mercury Lounge tonight. We caught them opening for the Mystery Jets and ended up enjoying them more than the Jets. They don't play a wholly unique form of indie Rock and Roll, but their live show is dynamite and they have great songs. As trite as it may seem, I've seen numerous folks excitedly twittering about them from live shows and blowing up the BV comment section about 'em. In the world of grass-roots marketing, word of mouth is king. We're excited to see them in the headlining slot and hear some new tunes. The band is heading into the studio soon to record their debut LP are touring the East Coast through June.

Grizzly Gets 9.0

Come on! Like you didn't see it coming. Grizzly Bear's extremely buzzed about Veckatimest, which is reaching heights of Merriweather hype, just dropped a 9.0 on P4K and a Best New Music. Sometimes, it's just too easy. The album is out today, so do with it what you will.

We enjoyed a fantastic Memorial Day off, munching pizza, buying Vaselines (the band) and drinking grenade-size ginger ales at our favorite music watering hole, Other Music; it was the Veckatimest listening party (see previous post.) We had to.

Anyway, just an FYI because this shit is all you're going to read about for awhile. Thought we would alert you.

Veckatimest Listening Party

In case you've been living in a cave for the past several weeks, you're aware that the new Grizzly Bear record Veckatimest is coming out on Tuesday via Warp. It leaked a while ago, but we're looking forward to hearing it in the quality format in which it was intended, not just some crappy web rip. Other Music is hosting a listening party on Memorial Day (Monday) from 4-6 pm with free pizza and other giveaways. Most importantly they will have limited edition versions of the LP and CD for purchase a day early. We leave you for the weekend (I think) with the video for their single and arguably best song on the record "Two Weeks" directed by Patrick Daughters. Poor guys and their exploding heads.

Little Boots "New in Town (Remix)" Emil & Friends

UPDATE: Due to some technical difficulties - this remix isn't available right now. Sucky. BUT - since we love Little Boots and it's the Friday before a long weekend, we figured we should probably just post her killer track "Mathematics again". So - here it is.

We received this track from Sweet Touch Records let's just say, too long ago, but it has graced the best of our electronic-dance party mixes. This tune bumps. Unless you are bat-blind, you know that Little Boots is ravaging the UK music scene; number one on BBC's Who to Watch in 2009 (former top-spots belong to Adele, Duffy, Ting Tings and Glasvegas,) Boots' Arecibo EP has generated pounds of press. Anticipating a June 8 UK-release of her debut record Hands (pre-order available on UK iTunes only) the buzz for this tenorion (her little light-bright-beat-machine) sensation. Stark contributor Lauren Mooney was lucky enough to catch Little Boots for an interview awhile back.

See a Boots tenorion demonstration for Hot Chip's "Ready for the Floor" after the jump. Pretty amazing.

New Music Round-Up

Photographed by Eric Ogden for USA Network's 'Character Project' @ The Heidleberg Project Archives - Detroit, MI

Between the showcase, real life and some awesome shows coming up (Hint: Roadside Graves CD release party) things are pretty crazy in the Stark world. Even though a commenter called us out for being "lazy" (achem that new release Tuesday post took me like 2 hours!) we're gonna drop you a few quick blurbs about some great new music coming up. Check out three great releases after the jump...

Deastro: Grower EP. We wrote recently about Deastro's upcoming record Moondagger, and how great their unfortunately-overlooked LP Keepers was. While Moondagger is out now digitally, we wanted to make sure to offer you Deastro's free EP Grower. This is a band destined for a big 2009. Shit, even Rolling Stone likes them.

Rainbow Arabia: Kabukimono (July 28th): Rainbow Arabia made a great impression on us with their Basta EP, and now return with Kabukimono, an LP due July 28. While often drawing comparisons to Gang Gang Dance (we're OK with that), Rainbow Arabia add even more middle eastern flair to their desert-dance music, giving them a unique voice and edge against other bands in their genre.

Sean Bones: Rings (7/21 Frenchkiss) Frenchkiss has been hitting them out of the damn park recently. Their roster has swelled with quality artists. Add Sean Bones to that bill. He plays a summery reggae-rock mix that exceeds in its catchiness and fun, even if it lacks a significant amount of depth in parts. He's one of the newest players on the scene starring opposite of Norah Jones in her new flick (she also guests here) and playing a slew of buzzy gigs. Certainly making our summer playlist with room to spare.

Northside Ticket Giveaway at The Music Slut

Not everyone can get on our guest list. SO, as of this morning The Music Slut is giving away 2 tickets to our Stark/Jinners Northside showcase on June 13th at Cameo! Email them HERE and one person will be selected at random on June 10th at Noon as the winner. As we wrote yesterday, the showcase will feature Tristen, Pursesnatches, April Smith, Jaymay and Xylos.

Additionally, The Music Slut has launched an amazing free compilation of Morrissey covers in honor of Moz' 50th birthday which is tomorrow 5/22! The compilation is entitled TMS Hearts Moz and features exclusive contributions from some of our favorite artists including: Sharon Van Etten, Pattern is Movement, Bridges and Power Lines, A Brief Smile and tons more. TMS has been giving these songs away every day, and will culminate the project with a special party at The Studio (at Webster Hall) tomorrow night 5/22 featuring live performances from A Brief Smile and Teddy Blanks. Happy birthday indeed!

Pop Ooga

We've been following Japanese "glitch" artist Shuta Hasunuma since his last record Ok Bamboo. Hasunuma is able to deftly blend organic and electric piano, synth, drums and percussion in such a way as to create lush landscapes that are also minmalist and beautiful. An easy comparison, is to The Books, but Hasunuma is able to channel a sound of his own that is warmer, and to us at least, more evocative of his home Japan.

Western Vinyl releases Pop Ooga, Hasunuma's third on June 6th.

Bella Watt - Tonight at Mercury Lounge

We just wanted to give our good friends at Bella Watt a shout out for their Mercury Lounge debut tonight. The folks in Bella Watt have been touring NYC hard and are beginning to develop a solid fanbase. They will be playing mostly tunes from their sophomore LP The Mirror Test which we wrote about and is on sale now. Their sound draws from the darker side of the rock/electronic spectrum, highlighted by arpeggiated guitars, different time signatures and solid melodies. They take the stage tonight at 11:30pm.

Mat Kearney's New Album Is Boring Tuna, But Here's A Review Anyway

If you’re going to be a Chris Martin-a-like singer/songwriter, you have to be sad. This is a hypothesis that can be proven after listening to Mat Kearney’s third album, City of Black & White, out today. Kearney returns to crooning about love and… love, after hitting it big among Grey’s Anatomy TiVo-ers with his second album Nothing Left to Lose. His new effort might be tolerable if only the guy had some problems or conflicts (some addictions, maybe?) to fill 12 tracks. I’m not wishing a tragedy on him or anything, but something needs to give these songs substance. The album is loaded with self-satisfied melodies and warm instrumentation. Everything is too cozy. Being happy is fine, as long as you actually have something to say, and sadly, Kearney doesn’t.

For the rest of Deanna McLafferty's review of City of Black & White, read on!

“All I Have” opens the album tellingly, with a catchy enough chorus and sunshine lyrics. Four songs with the same formula follow, including the bland single “Closer to Love.” If Scrubs didn’t end this season, I’m sure Zach Braff would be begging for the rights to play this one. “Fire and Rain” is my favorite of the bunch, with a mildly interesting arrangement and the utilization of Kearney's beautiful falsetto. In “Here We Go,” he sings, “Uh oh, here we go again/ I know how I lost a friend,” channeling a similarly sounding band, The Fray. Everything sounds like a copy of a copy of a copy, and it’s hard to distinguish one song from the next.

The first half of the disc, however mediocre and unoriginal it may be at times, would be just fine if it wasn’t for the sore thumb of a tune, “New York to California,” which makes me want to strangle babies. Obviously written to sweep a lady off her feet, the song is apparently a heart-felt love ballad about the lengths to which Kearney would go to prove his feelings for this special gal. Sample lyrics: “No mountain’s too high/ No stone is too small/ I’d build a bridge through the fire/ For you I would crawl from New York to California.” First of all, “no stone is too small”? How could a stone being small be an obstacle? Second, this song has already been written. It’s called “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and it’s better than this intensely corny version. The song itself is painfully slow and filled with an uninspired “la la la” section. If it was written for me, I’d send it back!

I would review the second half of the album, but there aren’t any spoiler alerts necessary there. It’s much more of the same. Sure, some of these criticisms are cheap shots. After all, you should know what you’re getting with these carbon copy, love-sick songwriters, and “Closer to Love” would be fine to hear on the radio on a summer afternoon. Plus, Kearney does have some impressive pipes. I’m sure he wasn’t trying to rewrite music history with this disc, and that he did not.

Tuesday Release Day: Passion Pit, Au Revoir Simone, John Vanderslice, Others

Artist: Passion Pit
Album: Manners (Frenchkiss/Columbia)
mp3: "Moth's Wings"

Today is full of great releases. Our favorite this week is Passion Pit's Manners. Passion Pit has been crafting excellent club-style indie pop since the release of their amazing Chunk of Change EP. They have signed to a deal with Frenchkiss and Columbia and today released Manners, their full- blooded dance rock LP that Vince raved about a few weeks ago. We missed them on the booze cruise last night in NY, but keep your eye on this band as they are poised for crossover success this year i.e. MGMT. Manners seems to lack a driving power single such as "Time to Pretend", but the consistent level of quality throughout this record should not be missed. See the rest of our picks after the jump...

Artist: John Vanderslice
Album: Romanian Names (Dead Oceans)
Mp3: "Fetal Horses"

Consistency is the word when it comes to John Vanderslice. Today, he offers up his seventh release Romanian Names, which is yet another example of this fine singer/songwriter's talent for crafting well developed and mature compositions. While we haven't heard the album in its entirety yet, the songs we have heard don't stray far from his previous output, but when it comes to John Vanderslice that's not a bad thing at all.

Artist: Polly Scattergood
Album: Polly Scattergood (Mute)
Mp3: "Nitrogen Pink"

London-based singer Polly Scattergood releases her self-titled debut record today on Mute. While there are some inconsistencies on this release, Polly Scattergood's potential shines brightly on this album. Standout tracks such as "Nitrogen Pink" demonstrate her talent for writing catchy songs that grow and develop around a unique voice that can recall anyone from Keren Ann, to Kate Bush orTori Amos. She puts her emotion clearly on display, sometimes to a fault, but the confessional style of her writing succeeds on more than one occasion, leading us to believe that as she continues to develop she can be a true standout on the scene.

Artist: Au Revoir Simone
Album: Still Night, Still Light (Our Secret Record Company)

Au Revoir Simone release their third, and arguably best record Still Night, Still Light, today. From what we've heard, there isn't much departure here from their previous efforts, but they have stepped up the songwriting quality a touch, delivering a more fully formed picture of the trio's sound. While incorporating elements of disco backed by drums tracks and synths, Au Revoir Simone still manage to convey an underlying emotion of pensive sadness, which gives Still Night Still Light an edge and a quality that brings it above their more pop oriented peers who often lack emotional depth. Au Revoir Simone will be touring with the Antlers in the coming weeks, making it a bill not to be missed.

Artist: Magnolia Electric Company
Album: It's Made Me Cry (Secretly Canadian)

Last and most certainly not least is the digital release of Magnolia Electric Company's Record Store Day exclusive 7" It's Made Me Cry EP. It's vintage Jason Molina songwriting here, and if you've ever read this blog before, you know that he's one of our favorite current songwriters. While they may not be the pumping the spring weather jams you are looking for right now, these slow country burners do well for any evening or gray rainy day. All proceeds from the sale of the EP benefits go to the Evan Farrell Memorial Fund, which was set up for the two sons of the former Rogue Wave bassist, who died from injuries sustained in a house fire a couple years back.

Roman Candle - New Album - Pianos Tonight

Roman Candle were unfortunate victims of V2 Records' untimely floundering several years ago. They retired to their native Tennessee to lick their wounds and reassess the situation. In 2009, they have returned to the forefront with support from AAA radio, Paste Magazine, a tour and a great new record Oh Tall Tree In The Ear. An obscure reference, but they remind us a good deal of the Deadstring Brothers, a fantastic Detroit band with a Rolling Stones fetish and a kick ass live show. Roman Candle don't count on the Stones as much, but there are elements of their rock/Americana twang that recall the best parts of the Stones' Gram Parsons influenced country rock. Paste (stay strong homey) just called their record a "modern rock masterpiece" - a publicist's dream quote if we ever saw one. While that's some pretty ambitious praise, Roman Candle have made a solid and excellent record that has put them back on the path they were on with V2, if not in an even better place. They play tonight at Pianos and tomorrow at Maxwell's in Hoboken. Certainly a band to watch. Oh Tall Tree In The Ear is out now.

The Antlers: Get Signed, Remaster LP, Go on Tour

A lot can happen in a short period of time. We know. Now, The Antlers know. NPR named The Antler's recent record, Hospice, Best Album of 2009 "So Far," which is, I guess, saying something. It is an amazing record though.

So what's happening to frontman/founder Peter Silberman and these Brooklynites? They just signed to Frenchkiss, a label who definitely has a forward-thinking ear for the business -- case-and-point...Passion Pit. The Antlers are going to release a remastered version of Hospice on Aug. 18 and are embarking on a nice set of North American dates with the likes of Au Revoir Simone, Cotton Jones and one date with Cymbals Eat Guitars. Look for these guys to make major moves on the scene because they are already.

No Age Keeps Busy, New EP and More

L.A. noise-punkers No Age, specifically Randy Randall on guitar and Dean Spunt on vocals/drums, are not for lack of work. Aside from readying to embark on a massive tour with Deerhunter and Dan Deacon (dates T.B.A.), No Age is preparing to release a still-untitled EP on Sub Pop later this fall. Randall and Spunt are ready to record a follow up to last year's highly acclaimed Nouns, which found its way on to many a Best Of 2008 list -- i.e. Paste, Rolling Stone, GVB, Vince's and Matt's. Reporting via P4K. Head there for more on No Age and their myriad of musical and theatrical pursuits. Also check out the Holy Fuck remix Matt posted yesterday above.

Campaign to Save Paste Magazine

Paste Magazine is in dire financial straits. They have begun a donation campaign to save the publication from shutting its doors. For a donation of $20, you are granted access to 70 exclusive or rare downloads all donated by bands and artists Paste has covered for years. It's worth it.

Sure, they probably shouldn't have gone for the pay-what-you-want model. Ok, BUT: The slate of popular music magazines found on the racks are frankly terrible. They've become more about celebrity gossip and T&A, than about anything really having to do with music. While not everyone always agrees about the opinions or music Paste puts forth, this magazine has always been devoted to giving press to artists who would not nessecarily get it otherwise. For the larger artists they covered, it was always another feather in the cap of any press campaign to have a great feature in Paste. Over the years, we've formed numerous relationships with thier staff, and all of them have been dedicated music fans first, and writers second. To us at least, that always hit home. Agree with their musical taste or not, Paste deserves to stay in buisness. They add diversity and passion to our ever-shrinking musical world. Make a donation, get some free music, because it's going to take more than Brooklyn Vegan to get you out of your day job.

Cazumbi: African Sixties Garage

If anyone has walked into Other Music in the past three weeks or so, there's a great chance you've heard the staff blasting this record. I usually walk in, stop, wonder what the hell they were playing only to see that it was all coming from this compilation. It's a crazy-ass collection of '60s garage, R&B, and rock music with even some surf rock thrown in for good measure. The music comes from all regions of Africa and features some well known western hits. According to Other Music, some white Western artists "were not permitted to have records imported into the African nations, so lots of local groups popped up to record their own versions of classic jams which were then pressed domestically in Africa." You can't really go wrong with any track here. This is a limited edition offer, so when these things are gone -- they're gone for good. Buy it HERE.

Video: Patrick Watson & The Wooden Arms, "Fireweed"

We received Patrick Watson's newest effort, Wooden Arms a while back, but only recently plunged its depths. What originally caught our attention was not only the fact that Watson has toured with Elvis Perkins, The Cold War Kids and Feist, but that he used bicycle parts as a percussive backing, which was inspired by '40's cartoons and The Twilight Zone. The video above for "Fireweed" is beautifully artistic, depicting a man on fire traveling across what looks like the New Zealand country side or maybe something from Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Who knows. The expansive camera work creates landscapes that are accentuated fantastically by the subsequent soundscape of Watson & Co. Watch in HQ and with headphones for full effect.

Download Gaslight Anthem Live at Park Ave.

You want The '59 Sound? You got it. We just received the download for the limited edition, Gaslight Live @ Park Ave and we wanted to pass it on to you. Click the link above for the six-track download; it is truly an insightful look into the raw energy and attack-minded performance that is a Gaslight live show. Stark contributor Matt Murphy can attest. Enjoy.

Video: Sharon Van Etten "For You"

It can't be easy for a singer songwriter in the folk genre. Every night in every town you have countless men and women slinging their songs with acoustic guitars and softly sung lyrics. Luckily for us, Brooklyn-based Sharon Van Etten has found her way out of the mire and into the eye of the press, receiving rave reviews (see our thoughts here) for her new album because I was in love, due May 9 on Language of Stone. Hew new video "For You" debuted on Pitchfork, no less. Yes, even they label her as a Cat Power disciple, but her songs and this video are a stark reminder that only a mass of talent and a good voice can propel one above the sea of open-mic-mediocrity. Van Etten is currently touring Europe with the equally great and underappreciated Great Lake Swimmers.

Go See Tori Amos If You're Into It

Tori Amos, whose eternally youthful appearance and demeanor suggests a much younger person than 45 years old, has a new album out next week called Abnormally Attracted to Sin. We're not particularly attracted to Tori Amos, abnormally or otherwise, but we can still roll with the redhead any day. She's been doing her thing for pretty much the longest time ever and has managed to find commercial success while retaining artistic freedom. Good for her. She begins a full U.S. tour in Seattle on July 10th, and ends up in Boston on August 17th. All the 'tweener dates after the jump.

Afroman Is Clearly Just The Best

Obviously you remember Afroman. The lovable flash-in-the-pan rapper with duh, the afro, was all over the airwaves and Napster in 2001 with GRAMMY-NOMINATED hit "Because I Got High,"and all over every frat party you've ever been to with the follow-up "Colt 45." This guy was basically a better version of certified assclown Asher Roth. I guess somewhere along the line, Afroman was dropped from his record label, probably because he couldn't figure out how to parlay his penchant for smoking marijuana into a third hit. And that's too bad.

But we should have never doubted Afroman, because Afroman has been busy quietly making the same song several times over and self-releasing brand new Afroman albums at an alarming rate rivaling the output of Ryan Adams. Last week, the MC released his twelfth (!) studio album, called Frobama: Head Of State. We haven't heard the joint yet, but if it's anything like the tremendous cover above, we don't need to. Afroman's still got it. (Fist bump to Idolator for dropping this nugget.)

Season Dreaming - LP

[mp3] Blind Man's Color: "Jimmy Dove"
[mp3] Blind Man's Colour "Warm Current's Pull"

We wrote several months ago about Blind Man's Colour's spacey yet captivating psych jams right around when they started receiving kudos from folks like Yeezy and Ed Droste. We knew they were destined for good things, and that premonition seems true as they announced yesterday the release of their debut LP Season Dreaming, due August 18th (Kanine). While we've only been through it once or twice, it seems to hold up the promise of the few songs we heard weeks ago. The duo of 19-year-olds, Kyle Wyss and Orhan Chettri, hailing from St. Petersburg, FL have added their contribution to our fuzzed-out, summer beach compilation. More to come for sure.
