Crocodiles Announce 'Endless Flowers'

Crocodiles are one of those bands that have managed to cut through the noise and stay on Stark's radar longer than most bands. Perhaps it was the amazing show we caught long ago at Pianos, or Crocodiles' innate ability to channel vintage noise rock we love (Jesus and Mary Chain) but we're still excited whenever we hear news of new music. Yesterday, they announced their third LP and first for Frenchkiss (after leaving Fat Possum), Endless Flowers, releasing June 5th. They're going to be hitting SX hard, and playing two NY shows Glasslands and Mercury April 11 and 12. Full tour dates after the jump. The new track sounds great - brighter - catchier - with flashes of Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but with some balls. The textures are thick, and the guitars piled on top of hook-laden male female vocals. Very glad these guys have managed to stick around.

New Release: The Dodos - No Color

The Dodos are a subtle band -- this is by no means meant to be negative. They are unassuming, somewhat mysterious, but their music is explosive and ingenious at times. With songs that lean toward gang-vocal choruses, swooping melodies, intricate and highly technical drumming and complex song-contruction, The Dodos are a music-lovers band...It is easy to get lost in their musicianship. No Color, releasing on March 15th via good old Frenchkiss, marks the fourth release by these San Francisco natives. Neko Case joins on this release collaborating on a majority of the songs. We have been fans since the 2008 release of Visiter, an eccentric and near perfect record. 2011 should be an exciting year for The Dodos as they gear up to reemerge on the scene.

Suckers Sign to Frenchkiss, Announce Album

Wow, how many times can you make three different publicists happy with one post? Maybe that says something about an album announcement. I had three different companies send me three different emails, all offering something unique having to do with the band Suckers. Even though I already liked them, and planned to announce this record, the tasteful onslaught of content made a post inevitable. Well done all parties involved; this is a thin line to walk, and usually more than one email about a band looks unprofessional, but this was a well-coordinated attack.

Back to the most important thing: the music. Suckers have indeed signed to the indie hit-maker label extraordinaire Frenchkiss Records, who will release Suckers' debut record Wild Smile on June 8th. To call Suckers a "buzz band" is an understatement. This Brooklyn four piece rose to prominence on the back of a stellar EP released in '09 that garnered raves from top tier publications ranging from Rolling Stone, to NME, to Stereogum. To call Suckers "indie dance-pop" is also an understatement. They find solace in tribal rhythms reminiscent of Tanlines, and catchy sing-along choruses that channel vintage Yeasayer.

Above is their fantastic "NO FUZZ!" take on The Raveonettes' epically fuzzy original "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" from top Stark album of 2009, In and Out of Control (VICE Music).

Freelance Whales Debut MP3

Today we get the first single off of The Freelance Whales' fantastic new LP Weathervanes coming March 16th on the ever-amazing Frenchkiss Records. This stellar group of musicians have busked the streets and subways of New York, and even Staten Island (what up Ashley and Pop Tarts). Their tender and often nostalgic (but not sentimental) sound employs a varying palate of instruments from banjo to the glock. Their songwriting is airtight and their execution, particularly live, has brought the national attention this hardworking band deserves. Great news folks. Last year The Dodos killed us with their Frenchkiss debut Visiter. Not only was it organic and melodic, it was driving and passionate, melding folk and country with floor-tom pounding and cymbal-bashing rock. This morning we saw that they have their follow-up album Time to Die coming out 9/15 again on Frenchkiss. Great news indeed. For this outing they enlisted ace producer Phil EK (Built To Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins) and a 21-year-old, classically-trained vibraphone player named Keaton Snyder. Sure. Lookin forward to September more and more.

The Antlers: Get Signed, Remaster LP, Go on Tour

A lot can happen in a short period of time. We know. Now, The Antlers know. NPR named The Antler's recent record, Hospice, Best Album of 2009 "So Far," which is, I guess, saying something. It is an amazing record though.

So what's happening to frontman/founder Peter Silberman and these Brooklynites? They just signed to Frenchkiss, a label who definitely has a forward-thinking ear for the business -- case-and-point...Passion Pit. The Antlers are going to release a remastered version of Hospice on Aug. 18 and are embarking on a nice set of North American dates with the likes of Au Revoir Simone, Cotton Jones and one date with Cymbals Eat Guitars. Look for these guys to make major moves on the scene because they are already.

We've been talking a lot lately about the upcoming Cut Off Your Hands album, You And I, which hits stores January 20 via Frenchkiss. So sue us. We're hooked on the band's hyperactive sound and debonair attitude, and can't wait for this thing to finally get released, after being teased by EP after video after single in anticipation of the debut. We're not really helping the cause by offering yet another new mp3 from the album, the frenzied "Turn Cold", which we've had on repeat since this morning. Grab away.

2009 Looks Great Already

Fresh on the heels of an announcement from Bruce, a preview from Animal Collective, and an exclusive taste of Dent May, 2009 is already shaping up to be a banner year for music judging by January's schedule alone. And now we've got another release from a great bunch of Kiwis that should certainly get you jazzed. Keep your eyes peeled for a fantastic new band out of New Zealand called Cut Off Your Hands. They're releasing their debut LP You And I on January 20th via Frenchkiss, and judging by the single "Happy As Can Be" (which you can grab above), they could very well be a household name in the future. SPIN does a pretty good job at describing the album's sound: "Power-pop ooh-lahs, hip-rocking post-punk backbeats, and sleak guitar fingerings." Holy adjectives and hyphens, Batman! Anyway, get stoked.
