Site and Sound: El Perro Del Mar

Site & Sound: El Perro Del Mar from VanLou Media on Vimeo.

We've been loving the beautiful work from newcomers Site and Sound. Above we share the live footage from El Perro Del Mar's recent NY show at The Knitting Factory. Of course, the true sadness here is the unfortunate timeliness of the song choice, Big Star's "Blue Moon." Filmed several weeks before Alex Chilton's tragic death, this video is a fitting tribute to a great songwriter, filmed in a gorgeous way, by the great folks at Site and Sound and Van Lou Media. See below for their brand new feature on Memory Tapes from his recent show at Tribeca Grand.

Standard Fare: The Noyelle Beat

Things move fast in the blog world, and sometimes you can't catch everything. So it goes with the ace trio Standard Fare from Sheffield, England. There are countless musical references on their debut record The Noyelle Beat (Bar None), everything from British post-punk greats, to more simple and poppy touch-points like The Cardigans. Really it's all moot, as Standard Fare have made a unique and solid record in their own right, anchored by their sweetly winning melodies and standout vocal performances from singer Emma Kupa.

Oh No Ono and Cate Le Bon

Photos by Karp -- It was a welcome return to the Mercury Lounge for the Stark team as we headed out last week for what turned out to be a night filled with great music, but little sleep.

We caught wind of opener Cate Le Bon, and were advised not to miss this rising Welsh songwriter. Luckily, we're good listeners. Le Bon charmed and wowed the early-comers. On stage with just a electric guitar accompaniment, there was something surprisingly ancient about Le Bon's sound. Interlaced with dark, minor-key, guitar lines, Le Bon's voice carried the room, and announced at least to us, the arrival of a stellar new talent. Le Bon's recently released record Me Oh My (Control Group), channels these intimate moments, amidst dissonant keyboard noise, drum crashes and droning electric guitar rhythms. Usually playing live with a full-band, we're glad we caught Le Bon stripped down, it was enthralling, raw, and more often than not, totally spellbinding.

See after the jump for Oh No Ono and all Karp's photos...

We expected a lot from headliner Oh No Ono. They delivered. Their standout new record Eggs, has been in constant rotation since its release in January on Friendly Fire Recordings. There's a lot going on in this band's sound. Moving from stoned-out Beatles-inspired melodies as in their album opener "Eleanor Speaks" to driving rhythms and sweeping choruses in the stellar "Helplessly Young," Oh No Ono succeed live as they do on record; keeping their consistency though tightly wound instrumental sections and utterly unique vocal performances. A trusted source called them the best band he saw at SXSW, and they may be the best band we see all Spring.

Tallest Man on Earth: Album Pre-Order, New MP3

There is not much more we can say that we haven't already said about the talents of Kristian Mattson, A.K.A the Tallest Man on Earth. The man is a near-perfect troubadour; seemingly spawned out of 60s Bohemia, Mattson manages to embody the soul of a Liam Clancy, harness the lyrical ability of a Dylan or word-mastery of a Ginsberg, all while exhibiting flawless, mechanical musicianship. His music hushes crowds and roars with genuineness that would even make all the aforementioned greats stop to take notice.

Pre-order the album here.

As If This Wasn't Creepy Enough...

It just got a lot creepier.

New Blitzen Trapper: "Heaven and Earth"

Blitzen Trapper's Furr was one of the best albums of '08, and yesterday we got a taste of their new album Destroyer of the Void which comes out June 8th on Sub Pop. Blitzen Trapper is largely the brainchild of lead singer Eric Earley, but has always occupied two songwriting worlds; with one half channeling a psyched-out rock version of Americana, and the other a softer more backwoods style of folk. Sometimes, this dichotomy succeeds, while at others leads to inconsistent output. From the first listen, it seems Blitzen Trapper will continue further down the (much better) road towards 70s flavored folk-rock perfection, with with M. Ward / Bright Eyes producer Mike Coykendal at the helm and even featuring one of our favorite vocalists Alela Diane. Tracklist and tour dates after the jump.

Destroyer of the Void:

New Gaslight Album: 'American Slang'

While their last album The '59 Sound was a little front-loaded, I still consider it one of the best records of last year and a true coming-out for what should be America's next great rock and roll band. The Gaslight Anthem have it all, a Springsteen fetish and a live show that rivals The Clash. Their new album American Slang (June 15, SideOneDummy) will be a true litmus test for this band. While it's not really their sophomore album, almost everyone discovered the band through The '59 Sound. So the pressure of the infamous "follow-up record" falls squarely on American Slang. We have faith though - The Gaslight Anthem can do no wrong.

Tracklisting:
01. American Slang
02. Stay Lucky
03. Bring It On
04. The Diamond Church Street Choir
05. The Queen of Lower Chelsea
06. Orphans
07. Boxer
08. Old Haunts
09. The Spirit Of Jazz
10. We Did It When We Were Youn

On Our Radar: Leisure "It's Alright (On the Suez Canal)"

Boston band Leisure have started to make a name for themselves by landing a support slot for the upcoming run of tour dates with Girls. Their sound is a little more polished than you would expect from someone touring with the lo-fi SF band, but Leisure's songs are quite engaging and filled with dynamic vocal performances, strings and even a tinge of Beirut's eclectic melodic sensibilities. Interested in hearing more from them for sure. They have a 7" coming next month, but you can grab tracks here. Tour dates after the jump. (via)

Grovesnor Debut Album: 'Soft Return'

Wanted to share with you this glossy and highly intoxicating new track from Grovesnor, the solo project from Hot Chip drummer Rob Smoughton. While we're always wary of drummers fronting as, um, front-men, what we've heard of Smoughton's project is filled with tasty echoes of 1980s pop touchpoints such as Steve Winwood, Hall and Oats, and Steely Dan. Soft Return comes out on May 25th via Lo Recordings.

VOLUSPA

After a seeming eternity, The Golden Filter's debut record Voluspa is finally on the verge of being released. We have the first single "Hide Me" for you above. We caught this notoriously enigmatic dance-pop/beyond-disco group at Le Poisson Rouge on some hazy night last year -- and from what we can remember of this late-night rendezvous, they were hard-hitting as shit and got that room moving. While their recorded output seems a little more dialed down, it loses none of it's potency and quality. Voluspa comes out on June 15th in the US, and in April in the UK. Yes, they will be at SX. See them. Cover art and dates post-jump.

THE GOLDEN FILTER : SXSW 2010 DATES

The Seams Will Probably Melt Your Heart

Totally true. If the Shiba Inu puppies cross bred with Sally Draper and Christian the Lion, it would probably result in The Seams. The Brooklyn duo's new album, Spanish American, is Adorable City, population: these guys. The cuteness factor doesn't really detract from the music, though, which is the most I could have hoped for given the band's track record. Jonathan Lullo and Dan Shephard come from the dearly departed, criminally underrated Down to Earth Approach, which released two of the most heartfelt, midwest emo albums of the 2000's on Vagrant before calling it quits in '07. Basically, the band was the modern-day Gin Blossoms.

If that comparison piques your interest - and it should, because hey, that band wrote some hits - then do check out The Seams. There isn't a whole lot different between Spanish American and DTEA's swan song, Come Back to You, save for a noticeably absent crunch. The nine songs that make up the album are sweet, intelligent love songs employing Lullo's earnest croon and knack for pop sensibilities. Admittedly, there's nothing earth-shattering about the duo, but sometimes you just need a little catchy pop-rock capable of making you swoon, right?

Best news of all: Spanish American is 100% free to download, courtesy of the bitching Air & Sea Battle. If you still need some convincing before DOWNLOADING A FREE ALBUM, then by all means, check out the two mp3's we're offering above. And if you still don't dig it, then your girlfriend will. You're welcome.

Stark's Bits of Whatever and a Note

Here are little bits of whatever that survived the inbox purge of SXSW blasts, no-name remixers and other sub-par music submissions. For as those close to the Stark camp know,  things just picked up vocationally as well as extracurricularly. As such, our posting has been limited and for that we apologize. For now, we will give you what we can, and hopefully start making a few knots when the winds shift.

Little bits of whatever (week of 03/8):

  • Megafaun + Tallest Man = cover of Bon Iver's "Creature Fear" shown above. I don't have enough time to call out Bon here, so I'll leave that for my black list post when it comes to fruition.
  • Neon Indian drops his newest single "Sleep Paralyist"  co-produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor on Green Label Sound's website.
  • Echo & The Bunnymen kick off a string of US dates including a 5/1 date in NYC at Irving Plaza and also release a new single, "Porxy".
  • Our good friends, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons announced their SXSW showcases w/ Pretty Good Dance moves and actually got Stark to read something tagged "SXSW"
  • Billboard.com releases the second piece of SXSW mail we open -- their "20 Artists to Watch for at SXSW" list and it's embarrassing. She & Him is on there. Enough said. BLACK LIST!
  • That's all for now.

MG&V is Deer Tick, Dawes, and Delta Spirit

It's the goddamn Americana Traveling Willburys. Ok, while it's not Bob Dylan and George Harrison MG&V IS John McCauley - frontman of Deer Tick, Taylor Goldsmith - frontman of Dawes and Matt Vasquez - frontman of Delta Spirit. It's a three for three win -- featuring members of some of Stark's favorite bands. We don't have music yet, but we will soon. Here are the details from the PR.
As the project began to take shape, McCauley and Goldsmith decided Matt Vasquez was the man to complete their vision for the project. A few days after tape started rolling, Vasquez arrived in Nashville - never having met McCauley. The three songwriters immediately bonded and proceeded to make a timeless masterpiece. Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith also joined the group to contribute percussion.

MG&V will make their world debut at the Coda Agency SXSW Showcase at the Ale House on Friday, March 19th at 1 AM.

Album details will be released later in the year. Expect MG&V announcements at

Free Energy Live, Live

Morning all. An exciting week is upon us as Free Energy returns to NYC with back-to-back shows this Thursday (Mercury Lounge, NYC) and Friday (Knitting Factory, Brooklyn) both with Foreign Born supporting. Their debut record Stuck on Nothing dropped digitally yesterday, but physically on May 4 (Astralwerks/DFA Records.) Some are calling these skinny-jeaned Philadelphians (although the lead guitarist has a major Charlie Bucket thing going on) the Darkness of '10; they drop the falsetto, but keep the crotch rock. Simply put, this album makes you want to party and maybe break a table while doing so. In anticipation of their upcoming NYC shows, we offer you the above live track from a recording the Free Energy boys did for KEXP/Seattle, WA. Enjoy

Suckers Sign to Frenchkiss, Announce Album

Wow, how many times can you make three different publicists happy with one post? Maybe that says something about an album announcement. I had three different companies send me three different emails, all offering something unique having to do with the band Suckers. Even though I already liked them, and planned to announce this record, the tasteful onslaught of content made a post inevitable. Well done all parties involved; this is a thin line to walk, and usually more than one email about a band looks unprofessional, but this was a well-coordinated attack.

Back to the most important thing: the music. Suckers have indeed signed to the indie hit-maker label extraordinaire Frenchkiss Records, who will release Suckers' debut record Wild Smile on June 8th. To call Suckers a "buzz band" is an understatement. This Brooklyn four piece rose to prominence on the back of a stellar EP released in '09 that garnered raves from top tier publications ranging from Rolling Stone, to NME, to Stereogum. To call Suckers "indie dance-pop" is also an understatement. They find solace in tribal rhythms reminiscent of Tanlines, and catchy sing-along choruses that channel vintage Yeasayer.

Above is their fantastic "NO FUZZ!" take on The Raveonettes' epically fuzzy original "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed)" from top Stark album of 2009, In and Out of Control (VICE Music).

Enjoy the track above, and look out for Suckers on tour with label-mates Local Natives. Suckers are part of a STACKED bill tomorrow night (3/10) at Le Poission Rouge featuring perennial favorite Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers. Highly recommended show.

New Roadside Graves: "Liv Tyler"

It doesn't take much looking on this site to know our love of The Roadside Graves. Today, Stereogum premiered the video for their newest single "Liv Tyler" off of their upcoming EP You Won't Be Happy With Me coming out March 23 on Autumn Tone. Autumn Tone just reissued The 'Graves' first LP If Shaking Up Is All You Want To Do digitally with six bonus songs. An essential part of the Roadside collection to be sure. As guitarist Jeremy Benson noted in his interview with us, "Liv Tyler" finds the band incorporating more influences than simply The Band and Dylan. There are some atmospheric elements at play here, but when the Danny Federici (RIP) piano lines kick in you know the band hasn't strayed far from their NJ roots. Enjoy.

New Drive-By Truckers MP3: "Birthday Boy"

Somewhere along the way, The Drive-By Truckers got indie cred. The best part about this, is that the band didn't really do anything. To their credit, indie tastemakers like Stereogum and Pitchfork will sometimes get behind artists, because, well, they make good music. Yet, The Truckers are a safe bet. They smoke on stage, pound whiskey, and their beer of choice is more often than not PBR. Yet, the difference between The Truckers and The Wild Yaks, is that DBT have been doing this since PBR was a redneck beer, not the go-to choice of thrifty hipsters.

But we digress. My band of the decade has a new record coming: The Big To-Do drops March 16th on their new home, ATO. Today, we get the first Mike Cooley-fronted single, "Birthday Boy."

After a few weeks with the record, what strikes us about it is not the melodies, or the return to a really hard rocking attack. What really stands out, is that The Big To-Do contains some of the best stories The Truckers have compiled since Decoration Day. From "Drag The Lake Charlie" to "Birthday Boy" to "The Wig He Made Her Wear" the lyrics and characters are as well developed and compelling as short novels. The subject matter remains the same: small town life, huge problems, domestic violence, drinking, prostitution, and murder. Yet, the manner in which these tales are spun is as direct and engaging as if Patterson Hood sat on your porch for a few hours and laid it all bare for you.

That being said: enjoy the two tracks above. More on the record and its content coming up.

Lay Low, Emily Jane White

Emily Jane White
has crafted a subtly dark and beautiful record in her Milan Records' release Victorian America, coming out April 27th. There is a stark organic nature to these well-crafted string laden folk compositions. White's caramel thick and sultry voice has a gentle warmness that keeps what could otherwise be bleak and cold arrangements mysterious and alluring. She begins a New York residency tonight.

March 2nd- Sycamore- Brooklyn NY
March 5th- The Living Room- NYC
March 6th- Rockwood Music Hall- NYC

Elsewhere in the Living Room/Rockwood Scene...

...is Icelandic singer Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir, who plays under the name Lay Low. We're SOL as we missed her New York shows a few weeks back, but we're sure there is more to come from this fantastic new talent, as she promotes her upcoming record Farewell Good Night's Sleep, coming out March 9. Much has been made of her Iceland meets Tennessee twang and noted support from Lucinda Williams. Maybe we've listened to too much Nashville music, but we don't really get the country feel from Lay Low, but that doesn't make the record any less intriguing and great. It has the warm and soft feel of an Emilíana Torrini album and the timbre and mood of a more chipper and less AAA Norah Jones. One to watch this year for sure.

Artist to Watch: Kisses

With the release of their debut album The Heart of Nightlife still TBD, we are intrigued and totally addicted to the new duo from LA named simply Kisses. They deftly toe the line between the Euro-pop of JJ and Jens Lekman and the sugar-sweet-sunshine melodies of fellow LA duo the bird and the bee. What results is an amazingly enjoyable blend of electronic drum machines and Morissey-esque vocals, highlighted by tasteful synths and perfect melodies. Their album cover perfectly reflects the mood of the record: cocktails on soft West Coast afternoon; it could be 1978, or 2010 but no one really cares that much; your guests walk barefoot on the shag carpets, wear fun clothes and generally have a fantastic time. Kisses seem to still be assembling their team in LA, but it's no doubt that they will catch on, and catch on quick. You can grab the two mp3s above and check them out at this year's SXSW. Hey A&R people - here's a lay up for you. Check out Kisses now. Cover art after the jump.
