Nashville Review: Caitlin Rose @ Bobbie's Dairy Dip

There is nothing quite as enchanting as consuming greasy hamburgers and ice cream while enjoying "cosmic American music." Nashville's 21-year-old country-folk heroine Caitlin Rose ( a favorite of Stark's) found herself fighting traffic noise and food order announcements on Saturday night - this was a new one. Bobbie's Dairy Dip, the unique venue for the evenings performance, is not only Rose's full time employer, but one of Nashville's oldest burger joints.

The stage was situated in the parking lot to the right off the Dip, adorned with a simple, but effective house PA system. The sunset was the perfect backdrop for Rose's unrestrained and angelic sound. An increased set length and influx of Dip customers seemed to startle Rose, who strayed from her latest EP, Dead Flowers covering the likes of Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons. It was evident however, that Rose had little live experience with these cover-songs. Surprise, surprise, Rose broke her picking fingernail yet again, but nothing detracts from her powerful and awe-inspiring vocals. Rose thrives in A Capella situations where her voice goes unattested. Without guitar chords and strumming patterns to worry about, Rose relaxes and her vocals become all the more impressive. On a personal note, we would like to once, leave a Caitlin Rose show cheerful, rather than somber. Perhaps "T-Shirt" isn't the best concert closer. And to all you local performers out there, keep doing what you're doing. But ask yourself this, 'are you ready for a Throwdown?'

What can't Caitlin Rose do? After releasing her debut record earlier this year, Own Side Now, Rose took the UK by storm ruffling feathers at NME, BBC and Q Magazine. Shortly thereafter, she returned to the states garnering album reviews from the New York Times, NPR, LA Weekly and more. Doing what a good young artist does best, Rose kept to the road spreading her crystalline voice, cheekily-creative lyrics and southern charm. This Nashville-native was making friends in the right places; ultimately those friendships landed her a record deal with ATO Records. Home, or former home, to such artists as Drive By Truckers, Dawes, My Morning Jacket and Gomez, ATO will add a much needed stiff-label backing to Rose's exponential career path. Soon to join the likes of Justin Townes Earle/Jason Isbell and Hayes Carll on a Fall tour, Rose is poised and positioned for continued success; keep your eye on her...we have for the past four years and it is paying off.

Caitlin Rose has been a staple on this blog since its inception. We have shared live reviews, videos, Daytrotter Sessions and much more. Ms. Rose's career has been a joy to watch and it is now very quickly culminating in the release of her debut LP, Our Own Side -- US release date still TBA; she is currently touring in the UK. The video above is for a standout track from the new record titled, "Shanghai Cigarettes" and let's just say it came along way from THIS. We're excited that Ms. Rose was able to hunker down and finish what we know, was a long and meticulous record writing/recording process. This song does the body good and we look forward to Caitlin's state-side release and hopefully, a great tour to follow (NYC please.). Play the above on repeat and all will be right with the world. CMJ Watch III: Caitlin Rose

Caitlin Rose, purveyor of her own brand of "cosmic American music" and Bobbie's Dairy Dip ice cream, makes her annual trip from Nashville to NYC for a week of shows, most during CMJ.

While some New Yorkers stay away from CMJ due to it's "crowds", "hype", and "hipster kids" - Rose is a reason to make it out. Many bands during CMJ can be seen throughout the year at NYvenues, but the real treats come in the form of artists like Rose who can only make it to NY about once a year.

She draws from all forms of country music, but manages to maintain a unique sound that recalls such influences as Gram Parsons, Patsy Cline and Townes Van Zandt. Yet, she plays with her own attitude and style - driving each song with lyrics like "true love is a shotgun wedding" (fist pump to Bristol Palin.) Rose can sing in a sometimes quirky voice, but can also wail like the aforementioned Ms. Cline.

Caitlin Rose is here for seven days playing four shows, so you jaded bastards have no excuse for not coming to at least one. She also hates the word "indie" so you won't be getting too much of that here. Rose's EP Dead Flowers and 7" Gorilla Man are out now and available HERE for $5.

New Caitlin Rose: "I Was Cruel"

We gave you the first taste of Caitlin Rose's new album - The Stand In (March 5 ATO) - a few weeks back with "No One to Call." Today we get the gorgeous and striking pseudo-ballad "I Was Cruel" a Deep Vibration cover (who are excellent in their own right). Rose told Spin: "This album could be considered my first attempt at a high kick," she says. "We're not aiming to make indie-sounding records. How boring would that be?" Here Caitlin Rose covers JD Souther's timeless "Faithless Love" popularized by Rose idol Linda Ronstadt on her '74 classic Heart Like a Wheel. Love it. Rose's excellent debut album Own Side Now is out now on Theory 8 Records. It has been awhile since we waxed positive about one of our favorite Nashville songstresses, Caitlin Rose. Recently added to the bill at Austin City Limits, Ms. Rose has quickly made a name for herself in her hometown playing with a revolving door of fantastic musicians such as Justin Townes Earle (flood victim relief concert) Jordan Caress (who supports her on this Daytrotter session - what up Jordan!) And the Relatives, Johnny Corndawg, Bowerbirds, Tristen (!) and more. Her draw is beginning to spread like wildfire across the pond as well with features by the Gaurdian, Gods in the TV among others.

In most her recent bout of limelight harnessing, Ms. Rose performed four tunes on the always intimate and fantastically produced, Daytrotter Sessions. Her full length is due at the end of August! Until then, grab the fantastic Dead Flowers EP. Happy long weekend all.

Matt's Top 30 of 2010

This was an amazing year for music. Cut through the squall, the white blogger noise, the twitters, facebook “likes,” Pitchfork Best New Musics, blogger arguments, and you could see the true quality underneath. Sounds daunting doesn’t it? It was. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for true music fans to wade through the countless buzzbands, myspace demos, bandcamp sites and (even our own) blog posts, to find the good stuff. But it’s there. Having thousands of bands and instantly obtainable music is a GOOD thing, BUT, it puts a lot of pressure on blogs and consumers to make the right calls. Where should people turn to find out what they should listen to? The answer is not easy. There is no one place. The marketplace is an aggregation of reviews and buzz and it’s 100% subjective. What you want to read and listen to, is largely up to you. That’s why Kanye is not in my top 30. People don’t come here to read about Kanye. Kanye West made one of the most important records of the year, one that requires a strong and deep listen. Then it’s the age-old list question: “Best” vs. “Favorite”?

There’s no answer there either. This list is an amalgamation of both, much like the musical landscape we’re all navigating. For some, the best record of the year is a fuzzy drone album, or a hard core hip hop record. Just no one here, and that’s fine. So I give you MY top 30 records of the year. Records that I think are truly great, while at the same time having affected my life on a daily basis. I hope you enjoy them. I sure as shit did.

These are albums I thought we're truly fantastic artistic statements -- records that I feel everyone should hear at least once, but for whatever reason, I never connected with personally. They deserve to be mentioned in any top 2010 list, and therefore I have included them here.

10. Jason Moran Ten
As we wrote several months ago, Ten is a defining career statement from one of the preeminent musical geniuses composing music today. Awarded with the prestigious MacArthur Grant earlier this year, Moran has established himself as an A+ level artist to be compared with current and past greats, not just musical, but also in the world of film, dance, art and sculpture. To his even further credit, Moran has done well to touch nearly all of the aforementioned spheres of the art world by deftly combining elements of his recorded and live output with elements from all aspects of the art world at large. That being said, when his trio (with Tucker Martine and Nasheet Waits) lock into a 4/4 groove there are no barriers to enjoyment - this is music for everyone that just happens to be played and composed amazingly well.

9. Joanna Newsom Have One On Me
This record is simply put, a beautiful composition. It resonates in its wholeness, and thrills through its tiny moments of organic purity and grace. Have One On Me swells with confidence and maturity - hitting its highs during utterly unique full-band moments; yet, the quietest stretches, those delicate, fragile, finger-plucked songs, like "Autumn" and "Baby Birch" strike to the core and demonstrate the true compositional talent of this strange and devastatingly talented woman.

8. Kisses The Heart of The Nightlife
I stumbled upon this album accidentally almost a year ago... it was immediate, sad, timeless, poppy, and literally came from nowhere. The Heart of The Nightlife has not been off my iPhone shuffle for more than a week (if ever) since I first discovered it. That's a beguiling feat, that amazes even me. There's a staying power to this album that captures you somehow -- it burrows itself into your world, like it's always been there. It's plush and wonderful, melancholy, and inexplicably memorable. On a strange hungover CMJ morning, the three (two principal) members of Kisses sealed their position in my top ten, with a set that (again, mysteriously) captured my full-attention, at a moment where any lesser band would've been met with that hazy stare and a trip to the bar. But I stood there, and for the same reasons I haven't yet switched out their album on my iPhone, ate up every note of their performance. To this day, I'm not quite sure what those reasons are, but I really could care less, I'm very glad to have this record in my world.

7. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti Before Today
This is an odd, quirky, mysterious, and ultimately extremely rewarding effort from an artist that honestly, I never thought I would really enjoy. Coming from the margins of the LA indie/noise scene Ariel Pink have managed to find some semblance of balance and clarity with their latest record. Before Today manages to uphold its strong artistic integrity, while flirting with accessible melodies and more traditional song arrangements. See kids, lesson learned, write good songs, and no matter how arty you are, they will resonate with people regardless of genre or meaningless labels. Before Today is a great record, yet, its promise makes me think the next album could be a masterpiece.

6. Caitlin Rose Own Side Now (US Release 3/15 Theory 8)
I've been waiting a long time to put a Caitlin Rose full length in my top ten. That's no knock on Caitlin. She was maybe 17 when I first heard some demos and caught a shaky, yet ballsy teenager playing a tambourine alone on stage at Pianos. Now, Caitlin Rose is breaking in the UK, and has crafted a record as intimate as Van-Etten's Epic as moody as Teen Dream and as country-pristine as The Guitar Song. Admittedly, this isn't the record I expected from Caitlin, and it took me a bit to get over that. I don't even know if this is the record Caitlin expected from herself. But Own Side Now is sweeping and grand, yet, it's stellar for the moments you don't expect -- those vintage Caitlin Rose vocal blasts at the end of "Shanghai Cigarettes" and "For The Rabbits" and the quiet guitar slaps of "Own Side Now." Other people love this record for its timeless sound, well-crafted tunes, and careful instrumentation. I love this record for its fragile familiarity, and for those brilliant flashes when the gutsy, mouthy, nervous-as-shit kid with the massive pipes comes blasting through my speakers. That's the good stuff right there folks.

5. Jamey Johnson The Guitar Song
Hi reader. You're probably sitting nestled away with your stupid cat somewhere in our bigger markets - New York or LA, probably Seattle. There's a good chance, you haven't heard of, nor want to hear about Jamey Johnson. For someone that loves country music, I was scared shitless about falling for him. This. Is. Not. "Hat Country." A term I learned only to describe what Jamey Johnson isn't. Jamey isn't counted in Nashville high society. Don't call it bullshit "Outlaw Country" either. Jamey Johnson has crafted a pristine, bold, ass-kicking, and deeply heartfelt album in The Guitar Song. Sift through it. It's thick, and filled with timeless, honky-tonked, drug-addled, tunes that are as devastating in their content as they are pretty in their execution. Never since Waylon can a man sing a ballad like Jamey, and back it up with the full on ass kicking Jamey Johnson could probably hand out to any skinny, blog-loving city-dweller like you or I.
4. Black Keys Brothers
Imagine you never heard of The Black Keys. Take out Brothers. Put it on. Loud. And try and tell me that this isn't one of the top five greatest things you heard all year.

3. Sharon Van Etten Epic
Let's make it personal. I wanted to badly to make this my record of the year. It almost was. Fuck, maybe it still is. I don't know, who cares. This is a compact portrait of the best new singer songwriter writing songs today. Come on Justin Vernon, write this album. While achingly short at 7 songs, Epic is graceful and delicate in its power, thick and rich in content, while devastatingly well-written and gorgeous. It holds a mood and a passion much in the same way Teen Dream does. Epic brings the listener in with its accessible melodies and tasteful instrumentation, and while holding them suspended, hammers them with lyrical depth and intimacy, while on top of it all sits Van-Etten's vocal performance, one of the best captured on record this year.

2. Titus Andronicus The Monitor
Take everything amazing that Teen Dream is, distort it, fuck it up, pour beer on it, piss on it and expand it into a swirling opus, and you might come near the shambling mess that sprawls across the ten tracks of Titus Andronicus' The Monitor. From Abraham Lincoln quotes, to extended Civil War themes, to screams, to perfectly crafted melodies hidden behind guitar squall, The Monitor is a brave, imperfect beast, that will capture and make you hurt (if you play it as loud as it should be played). It makes up in moxie, what it lacks in repeatability.

1. Beach House Teen Dream
Great albums capture feelings whole. Your own, perhaps the band's. Listen to the heartache in "Used to Be." Listen to the song structure, the lyrics, the craftsmanship, the detail, the emotion, the power, the texture, the layers, the season, the colors, the people and the emotion. Expand that throughout an entire album, and throughout a duo who have come of age and persevered in a world of fleeting songs and flash-in-the-pan bands. Expand that pure quality, and you will have the record of the year Teen Dream from Beach House.

So to commemorate Vince's relocation to Nashville, I decided to post (again) on Stark favorite and Nashville local Catlin Rose. I am straight stealing this post from the Nashville Cream, which is the blog of local publication and employer of Vince - The Nashville Scene. (Also take note of their post on our gracious bocce host Janet Timmons, who runs the blog Out the Other.)

I had a chance to hang with Caitlin Rose a few weeks back and this short video does a pretty good job of capturing the experience. Seriously, it's only a matter of time before people start hearing about her "Cosmic American Music" in the North. Enjoy the vid and her version of the Stones classic "Dead Flowers" played Townes Van Zandt style. Her EP Dead Flowers is out now, and she will be playing the 5 spot in Nashville on the 22nd.

Caitlin Rose:
To begin, go here, download and listen to Nashville singer, Caitlin Rose's cover of the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers." While she draws more from the equally moving Townes Van Zandt version of the song, Rose manages to deftly touch upon the necessary edge, wit, and sarcasm found in the original Stones' version. Rose is a fixture on the Nashville music scene and is beginning to generate buzz worthy of her voice. A modern blend of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan, Rose will be one to watch in '08. She just released her EP, Dead Flowers and has an LP planned for this summer. Born Ruffians:
I recently read a review of the new Born Ruffians album Red, Yellow, Blue that described the vocals as "yelping." I don't know if that's good or bad. What I do know, is that the back-up singers on this record, really do yelp. The songs are pure indie rock: hooky lines, forms that morph and high-energy delivery. Honestly, the jury is still out on this record, but one thing can be said, the sound is fresh, catchy and crisp. I guess that's enough to please.

Felice Brothers:
I had high hopes for this self-titled record — to say it did not deliver, is unfair. However, there is something missing. Their sound draws from everything good about Americana music these days. It has the rag-tag feel of the Basement Tapes, the folk melodies and vocal delivery of the Roadside Graves, and ok, one of the signers sounds exactly like Dylan. Enough said right? Well, unfortunately the record drags. It's drawn out, and has one too many mid-tempo ballads (which I'm usually a sucker for). Yet, I can't complain — it's good music made by good folks. Check out one of the highlights, "Frankie's Gun." Bang, Bang, Bang.

Toumani Diabate:
I know very little about this artist. A co-worker turned me onto him and I know he recently played the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. Diabate plays some of the most gorgeous instrumental music I have heard, well, maybe not ever, but in a damn long while. Toumani is from Mali and plays the kora, which is essentially an African harp. His music sounds like it was composed hundreds of years ago, and dare I say, recalls traces of Bach, and Vivaldi. Yeah, it's that good. Amazingly, most of his playing is improvised. I don't know much about African music (I'm learning,) but this is just amazing. Go buy now.

El Guincho:
This one came direct from the blog world and straight onto my list of most anticipated releases. Their most recent record, Alegranza!, recalls a Spanish-style Panda Bear, which is nothing but a good thing. Samples of noises and sounds, laughter, steel drums and applause, all float in and out of expertly blended tropical rhythms. With tinges of afro-beat and Spanish pop, El Guincho create one of the best summer- driving, cocktail- imbibing records of the year. Don't play it around your parents though.

*Quality, not the best, but deal. It's nice music! Last night, Nashville went back in time. Not with Doc, but with host Nashville Cream -- radio promo done by Out the Other. Caitlin Rose, Tristen, And the Relatives, Turbo Fruits and other local bands took to the stage at Mercy Lounge performing some of the 70s greatest hits. Gotta love it. Today, we are trying to keep it vintage, but this is the blog world, so you know we won't. We received some lo-fi Flip videos from a friend at Theory 8 Records and management. Videos include covers of Linda Ronstadt's "Love Has No Pride" and Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me" performed by Caitlin Rose with band backing by And the Relatives and guest vocals by Tristen. "Yesterday I hit 6th and Red River (where it all happens) with only a moderate agenda and scored big with some great "day party" sets. Here are some highlights:

Caitlin Rose and Vetiver at the Austinist/BMI Party at Mohawk:
Caitlin Rose::
Caitlin Rose is a stone faced killer. She mercilessly launched charm bullets all over the mid-afternoon beer swiggers. Those that may have thought "ehh solo acoustic artists ehh" all got a reminder that when songs are really good, it doesn't much matter how they are accompanied. A particular highlight was "Answer in One of These Bottles," which has all the melody and wit I want in a country tune. The crowd joined in one the final chorus willingly.

Vetiver::
Vetiver's set was like sitting in a bath tub at just the right temperature with about a half a bottle of wine. Ya know that feeling where you don't actually know how long you will stay in one particular spot, but you have absolutely no intention of moving? Their songs are lean and satisfying with a lush blend of tones (acoustic and electric guitars, Wurly, electric bass) that made the set feel, as Dostoyevsky first said, "All good." I couldn't exactly tell the origin of each sound, which is, I think, how both band and audience wanted it. In short, these guys killed it and I was pleased to soak it up until sufficiently pruney.

Wavves and Lake (Ha! They're both water) Forcefield PR/Terrorbird Party at Red7:
Wavves::
Wavves are a couple of devious little fuckers. Slipping in a set of deafening 2:30 p.m. punk rants under the cover of hipster costumes. Clever clever. Strip the crunch off the drums and the reverb off the vocals and the sound is a crisp slap in the face. In a good way, like washing your face with cold water.

Lake::
Fun songs + relaxed performance = a relaxed, fun crowd. Lake seems like one of those bands that plays up the "oh, we don't really know what we're doing" thing, but their cover is blown with their hooky writing and intelligent arrangements. Think warm Wurly tone with jangly-electric guitar, zappy synth and Meg White drum beats. They were clearly having fun, not just performing, and it certainly translated. "

Caitlin Rose Announces US Dates

2 New York shows! You already know how much we love her upcoming album... Tour dates including SXSW after the jump.

NASHVILLE, TN – Caitlin Rose will kick off her US tour in Austin during SXSW, followed by eleven dates opening for Ron Sexsmith and then off of Australia for some dates with The Felice Brothers. Upon return, Caitlin will continue her US tour with sixteen dates opening for Johnny Flynn.

Rose’s full-length debut, Own Side Now, will be released on March 15, 2011 on Theory 8 Records with marketing and distribution provided by Thirty Tigers/RED. Rose co-produced the record with Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Will Oldham & Andrew Bird) & Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle).

Nashville Review: Corndawg a Surprise @ The 5 Spot

Greetings once again from Nashville. Not all future posts will be Nashville related, but there is just too much good music here to pass up.

Last night I attended a Corndawg, Alcohol Stuntband, Spiritual Family Reunion and Caitlin Rose show at the The 5 Spot in East Nashville. The show started late - real late. Spiritual, the opener, didn't go on until after 10:30 p.m. and Caitlin then followed.

Poor Caitlin. She was sans her main picking fingernail last night and that seemed to really throw her off. She wasn't used to using a guitar pick. Kind of crazy right? Add that the sound was not to her liking, and well she just seemed flustered. But put all that aside, when Caitlin brings it, the room listens. Even when battling a cold, Caitlin's voice is near perfect.

Here comes the surprise - Corndawg. Johnny Corndawg, as he refers to himself, is originally from Virginia (that's where he gets his southern soul) but now resides in Philadelphia (he likes it because everything is cheap.) Johnny let his guitar sound and energetic personality facilitate. There is no describing the sound of his guitar. Picture if you can, a 45-record of Robert Johnson or Leadbelly crackling through your speakers - Ok you got it? That's what his guitar sounded like. Standing with members of the local band And the Relatives, we were taken back. Talk about old tyme. Johnny played a great show.

Chris Crofton (Alcohol Stuntband), played solo and had the unfortunate time slot, playing last. At that point, the clock read 12:40 a.m. and bar-goers were getting restless. We all had work the next day, including the musicians. Chris seemed rightly upset about having to close at such a late hour. His energy was not lacking however.

Caitlin Rose Announces New Album

Exciting news today, as longtime Stark favorite Caitlin Rose announces her new album The Stand-In Feb 25 via Names Records (in the UK). The new record will be released on March 5th in the States via ATO and we very much welcome the new track, "No One To Call" below. Featuring Rose's signature vocal, "No One To Call" recalls the best of More Adventurous era Rilo Kiley intertwined with the warm glowing instrumentation and harmonies of the classic 70s-era Rondstandt anyone who follows her social media knows she loves so well. Great to hear new stuff from Ms. Rose. Tracklist after the jump.

For those of you keeping track, we somehow held off posting about Caitlin Rose since July 14. Recently featured on the cover of the Nashville Scene, Caitlin (known affectionately to some as Cato) joined local female artists Tristen and Those Darlins as they were profiled in an amazing feature by Scenester Tracy Moore (Holla!) -- a must read article for those interested in the fantastically talented and interwoven Nashville music underground.

Caitlin has been working hard to get her debut full-length off the ground (not yet given a street date,) but, no need, her EP Dead Flowers has not faded over time. In a YouTube exclusive, Caitlin performs a new tune off her upcoming LP titled, "Shanghai Cigerettes."

All those pictured above are good friends of Stark Online; be it Patrick Rodgers with whom some of us worked and attended Bonnaroo with; Eli Beaird and Andrew Brassel, with whom we once enjoyed intense fireworks, good concerts and a multiple whiskey's/PBRs. Caitlin Rose, long-time friend and companion of Stark, featured in many-a-post. Or, Tristen, good friend and opener for our Northside Showcase this Saturday.

We are glad to see them all in one place putting their various musical talents on display. And the Relatives recently released their newest EP, Animals which is available on iTunes and the usual spots. Tristen is getting ready for a Northeast tour and has handmade EPs available at her live shows. And Caitlin is in the process for finishing her debut full-length.

Buckle Up for CMJ 2008

It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous, music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.)

Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky.
