EMA: "Marked" Video

While maybe not our favorite track on the album, we wanted to post this great video from EMA's new album 'Past Life Martyred Saints.' It's been getting its fair share of well-deserved love in the usual niche indie-spheres, but outside of Spin Mag, it's appropriate to say that this album is still under-appreciated in the larger music realms. Would not be surprised to see this album on more than a few best of lists at year's end. EMA just posted a fantastic Daytrotter session as well.

A "Marked" single will be released in the US digitally and as a limited edition 7-inch in early December. B-side "Angelo", a new track featuring a guest verse by Mz'Gorjis of Oakland, CA's Platnum Platnum Glam Squad, will complement the gorgeously dark, breathy reverie of "Marked."

Keegan DeWitt: Nothing Shows

Staying on the Daytrotter theme, acclaimed film score composer Keegan DeWitt is set to release his new EP Nothing Shows July 13th exclusively through Daytrotter's Record Barn. This will be Daytrotter's first release, and will be available digitally through his site and physically at shows. The EP is mix of well-crafted, introspective, singer-songwriter material interspersed with upbeat, summery, tropical-beat driven songs (see mp3 above), which, to us, stand out far more than the quieter tracks. DeWitt currently resides in Nashville but is originally from Portland. It will be interesting to watch the two sides of this artist battle it out over the coming year.

Comprised of new material from their most recent release, The Big To-Do (ATO) these Georgia natives need no real introduction and or musical taglines/description; you know, we love. Daytrotter Welcomes Caitlin Rose

Caitlin Rose - Daytrotter Session

It has been awhile since we waxed positive about one of our favorite Nashville songstresses, Caitlin Rose. Recently added to the bill at Austin City Limits, Ms. Rose has quickly made a name for herself in her hometown playing with a revolving door of fantastic musicians such as Justin Townes Earle (flood victim relief concert) Jordan Caress (who supports her on this Daytrotter session - what up Jordan!) And the Relatives, Johnny Corndawg, Bowerbirds, Tristen (!) and more. Her draw is beginning to spread like wildfire across the pond as well with features by the Gaurdian, Gods in the TV among others.

In most her recent bout of limelight harnessing, Ms. Rose performed four tunes on the always intimate and fantastically produced, Daytrotter Sessions. Her full length is due at the end of August! Until then, grab the fantastic Dead Flowers EP. Happy long weekend all.

Daytrotter Session Aggregation

The Daytrotter Sessions have slowly become the indie-staple of the next step for certain artists, while for others, it serves as a time to strip down and hold your voice accountable -- Daytrotter reveals one's true colors, which makes it a great acoustic and musical benchmarking system. Some Stark favorites have graced the studio over the past week or two, all of which are worth mentioning here (in no particular order):

1) Tallest Man on Earth -- This is from way back, but talk about someone born to record at Daytrotter -- Kristian Matsson is an artistic enigma capable of crushing your soul, lifting you up, then making you stop to think about why your body still hurts. Truly one of the most uniquely genuine and inquisitive songwriters of the decade. Worth a good listen -- "I Want You (Dylan Cover)" and " I Won't Be Found (played on piano -- exquisite.)"

2)Or, the Whale -- San Francisco's answer to the wants of a fanbase that champions rainy days and ominous harmonies. Their self-titled '09 release came out on Sept. 19. Worth a good listen "Keep Me Up."

3)Carly Simon - Never Been Gone is her newest effort (dropped Oct. 27) which has met Luke warm reviews in the media, but we all know what she is famous for -- "You're So Vain" -- worth a good listen.

4)Magnolia Electric Co. - Another band made to play this musical venue, which is probably why they recorded seven songs while there. Their newest release Josephine doesn't stray far from their linear, yet pristine song writing style which is why we love it. Worth a good listen - "Arrow in the Gale/Josephine."

5)Wavves- Really? OK. What you got kid? Well, yeah, it sounds like Wavves in a cave -- two songs is about right; let's keep it at that.

6) The Antlers -- their 2009 release Hospice is a front runner for top spots on many Best of List's this year. Worth a good listen "Two."

Enjoy the Bad Veins Daytrotter Session here! First, it must be said, that Daytrotter does some fanstactic graphical work. Their band "photos" are, and have become, an easily recognizable staple of the blog world. Their lastest victims, Bad Veins, whose self-titled debut was released Tuesday, has been making a splash; incorporating etheral guitar lines and punchy vocals reminiscent of The National's Matt Berninger, Bad Veins deserves the press.

Bowerbirds Daytrotter Session

Stark favorites, the Bowerbirds, took to the Daytrotter studio with a raw forcefulness, offering three tracks from newest their record Upper Air which dropped today on Dead Oceans! Enjoy their session here, as it serves as a delicious cap off to what has been a technologically shitty, and extremely busy Tuesday.

Ezra Furman Harpoons Daytrotter (again)

"Take Off Your Sunglasses" (via Daytrotter session #1)

Ezra Fruman's songs are made for Daytrotter sessions. Quick, frantic, and often feeling dashed-off, Furman's tunes pack a mighty lyrical punch in compact accessible nuggets of melody. Put Furman anywhere with a guitar and he can produce or re-produce songs on the spot. So goes the story with his (arguably best) song "Take Off Your Sunglasses." According to our interview, he penned that song on demand for a young lass in a college dorm. So Ezra, one of the most exciting new musician out of Chicago, and maybe the US, returns to Daytrotter for his second session. Backed by his trustworthy (if not the most amazing) Harpoons, Ezra offers up three unreleased tunes and one from his excellent sophomore record Inside the Human Body. While his debut Banging Down the Doors still contains his best material, the relentless Furman is a songwriter who can't slow down his creativity, nor should he. These are always the artists to watch as they continue to develop and push their personal and artistic boundaries.
