Daytrotter Welcomes Caitlin Rose

It has been awhile since we waxed positive about one of our favorite Nashville songstresses, Caitlin Rose. Recently added to the bill at Austin City Limits, Ms. Rose has quickly made a name for herself in her hometown playing with a revolving door of fantastic musicians such as Justin Townes Earle (flood victim relief concert) Jordan Caress (who supports her on this Daytrotter session - what up Jordan!) And the Relatives, Johnny Corndawg, Bowerbirds, Tristen (!) and more. Her draw is beginning to spread like wildfire across the pond as well with features by the Gaurdian, Gods in the TV among others.

In most her recent bout of limelight harnessing, Ms. Rose performed four tunes on the always intimate and fantastically produced, Daytrotter Sessions. Her full length is due at the end of August! Until then, grab the fantastic Dead Flowers EP. Happy long weekend all.

One of the most consistent listens this Spring has been the music of MillionYoung. Mr. Little Jeans: New EP, New MP3

I have a not-so-secret obsession with Mr. Little Jeans. Let's just say it has manifested itself into an iPod play count of well over 100 (I only own two tracks that I snagged off of RCRD LBL months ago.) Somehow, Mr. Little Jeans survived a massive music purge, only to emerge as one of the highest played artists on this snarky bloggers iTouch. What makes these tracks so solid? Pristine song construction, a fresh pop-tinge, hooky choruses and electro-backing beats with a tropical, buoyant feel. I have been thirsting for more Little Jeans -- ask and you shall receive. Mr. Little Jean has finally announced a debut EP, titled Angel, which releases June 7th on Neon Gold Records. Better get this shiz while you can, only 300 will be pressed. Check out the exclusive new track above, "Faking Gold."

New Land of Talk Record and Dates

Montreal’s Land of Talk return this summer with the follow up to their 2008 buzz disk Some Are Lakes. The new studio set, titled Cloak and Cipher, hits the street on August 24 via Saddle Creek. Frontwoman and chief song-smith, Elizabeth Powell has gained quite a reputation in the last couple years for her relaxed, yet cutting voice, lean arrangements and pleasing visual aesthetic (ahem). We think her rising stock is well earned. Stay tuned for previews for Cloak and Cipher. Meanwhile, dig this live performance of the title track from Some Are Lakes.

Mountain Man at Mercury Lounge

Photos by Karp

It's not often I'll write reviews in the first person, but I feel that Jon Pareles will forgive me this one indiscretion today. Hopefully.

I'm writing this way, as my experience at Mountain Man last week was a personal one. There are many types of concert going experiences. Singing along to U2 or Bruce Springsteen in High School with thousands of other people, or watching that one electrifying performance in small club full of people, you feel like you're part of something larger, something bigger than just yourself. Yet, watching the three women from Mountain Man sing (mostly a capella) their way through the songs on their upcoming record Made The Harbor, I felt I was alone in a room somewhere (certainly not the Mercury Lounge) watching something timeless being created right in front of me.

It wasn't an amazing display of musical prowess on stage. While they sound wonderful together, I've heard more spectacular singing voices, and the guitar playing... well. I make this point only to highlight the specialness of the three women's charisma on stage, and the power of the songs that they manage to create together. From an old German field recording to a Psalm, to original material written about the age-less topic of sexual frustration, Mountain Man give the listener the feeling that they are looking in on some ancient Alan Lomax recording session, or a private rehearsal of sorts. It's almost a feeling of intrusion -- that you're somehow watching something intimate and personal -- a tender moment shared only between these three women, and you and only you, are lucky enough to have stumbled upon these songs and voices in some sort of otherworldly realm. All the sudden, the house music comes on, and the lights go up, and you realize much to your disappointment, that it wasn't a sort of lovely dream, but a real event, at the Mercury Lounge, and you have other shows to go to, and work tomorrow; but for that 40 minutes it was just you and Mountain Man, those timeless harmonies, and a deep feeling of satisfaction.

See more of Karp's photos after the jump. Check out another great review from Microphone Memory Emotion, who it's always a pleasure to catch a show with. Mountain Man are back in New York at The Knitting Factory June 9 and The Living Room June 10.

New Menomena (Finally)

It feels like we've been waiting forever for new music from Menomena, a group that crashed the indie party with their fantastic album Friend and Foe in early 2007. In a world where new content reigns supreme, a lay-off of three years can often spell doom for a band. It's a testament to their quality that folks are still clamoring for new material after that long a break. Yesterday, we got news of their new LP mines, due July 27th via Barsuk in the US. Their first track is above. In the interest of helping the band capture emails, and out of fear of the infamous 'delete blog' blogger feature - we've embedded their mp3 topspin widget below (ew). Yes, that is the cover art, and as p4k noted: "It's actually a stereogram, a 3D optical illusion (kind of a simple version of those magic eye things)."

Numbers Don't Lie

Here's a fantastic little gem of a video for a Friday -- "Numbers Don't Lie" is one of the standout tracks from The Mynabirds excellent record What We Lose in The Fire, We Gain in The Flood out now on Saddle Creek.

New Single from The Radio Dept. - "Never Follow Suite"

Behold the new single "Never Follow Suite" from The Radio Dept.'s third album to-date, Clinging to a Scheme. Recently bequeathed with Pitchfork's coveted, Best New Music title, The Radio Dept. have found a happy, cohesive medium with this release. Labeled as "sun-soaked," "ambient," and "hypnotic," Clinging works well in headphones and even better on a nice breezy day, where nothing is the only thing on the day's agenda.

Enjoy! Is it Friday yet?

Solitude is Bliss

"Solitude is Bliss" is the psyched-out pop gem of Tame Impala's debut album Innerspeaker coming out June 8th on Modular. We've been spinning this record for a few weeks and it's a diverse effort, but manages to hold together in the end and makes for a rewarding full-length. That being said, these tunes are best consumed in small doses for the headiest effect. Dig the swirling "Runaway, Houses..." and the brand new remix of "Solitude is Bliss." Tame Impala are on tour w/ MGMT, but will be hitting NY solo. Dates after the jump.

Stark Spotlight: Thee Midniters

Thee Midniters may have been just another influential, but largely forgotten early rock band; that is, if they hadn't been social pioneers.

Coming out East L.A. in the 1960's, Thee Midniters blended gritty Motown sounds with the chaos emanating from those freaky English guys like the Stones and The Who. The difference with Thee Midniters is that they were not only Chicano, but they were more than happy to tell you about it. After building a deep and multi-racial fan base around L.A., the band broke nationally with a cover of Wilson Pickett's "The Land of 100 Dances" and then solidified their presence with an instrumental called "Whittier Boulevard." And while frontman Willie Garcia (a.k.a. Little Willia G) was happy to move asses with dance numbers, he and the band unapologetically fronted their Chicano heritgage with tracks like "Chicano Power." Thee Midniters brought a Latin presence to rock and roll years before Carlos Santana brought out those same three licks that he's still beating down today. Armed with great songs and raw power, Thee Midniters used their popularity to celebrate their heritage; they did so at a time when most bands just wanted blast the ills of society or get wasted. Check out their 2006 compilation "In Thee Midnite Hour," available on eMusic and Amazon.

Yours Truly: Quadron

quadron "herfra hvor vi står" from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

We've written about this amazing young talent from Denmark in the past, and this morning Your Truly sent over another fantastic offering from Quadron. "Herfra Hvor Vi Star" is the last song on Quadron's self-titled debut, out now. While not the strongest song on the record, it exists as a vehicle to showcase lead vocalist Coco's absolutely stellar vocal talent. We're a little surprised Quadron hasn't gotten more attention here in the states, but with a voice like that, it won't be that way for long.

Elizabeth Cook: Welder

Elizabeth Cook somehow escaped our radar over the past several records. Perhaps it was the pretty face, and bright blonde locks that made us think more of Taylor Swift than a gritty cutting edge country singer. There's something beguiling and charming about her new album Welder (out now Thirty One Tigers) that manages to get under your skin and stay with you well after you're finished listening. There are certainly some odd moments here to be sure, but that's part of the enigma that seems to be Elizabeth Cook. She clearly owes a huge debt to another purty blonde, Ms. Parton, but there is an intangible attitude and persona at play throughout this diverse and ultimately very satisfying effort, that is uniquely Cook's. From moments of crystal vocal clarity, to the timeless songs of American heartache ("Blackland Farmer") Elizabeth Cook has made a solid record in Welder that will not only appeal to the core alt-country audience, but to the wider range of alt/indie fans at large -- clearly a requirement for any modicum of success outside of Nashville these days. Highly recommended.

Band To Watch: Futurebirds

It's been a quick rise to prominence for this Athens, GA band in the Stark camp. This "unruly band of boys" fly the country-rock flag high, but make sure that flag is dirty, full of holes, and viewed through a sufficiently boozy, psyched-out haze. Falling somewhere between The Band and early My Morning Jacket, the songs on Futurebirds' excellent debut album Hampton's Lullaby are tastefully laced with weeping pedal steel, mandolins, and imbued with a distinct flair for well-crafted and efficient melodies. Yet, there is the tinge of grittiness that comes from well-placed overdrive and guitar noise keeping the Futurebirds from falling into the tragically broad "Americana" bin with other country-rock has-beens; the same has-beens who thought that owning The Basement Tapes entitled them to make an album.

Hampton's Lullaby comes out July 13th on Stark favorite, and quickly rising Autumn Tone Records. We're thrilled to be seeing Futurebirds with the equally amazing Jessica Lea Mayfield
this Saturday at Mercury Lounge. See after the jump for cover art and full Jessica Lea Mayfield tour dates.

New Video: Club 8 "Western Hospitality"

Club 8 "Western hospitality" from Labrador Records on Vimeo.

And let the rant begin...We are all busy. Yes. And in this increasing world of mobile devices and 140 character terse phrases, I need not tell you our (the consumer and interpreter) attention spans are dwindling. Certain areas of the music industry are suffering from this quick-hit digital shift, attempting to reform their ways to better compete. However, there is something to be said for sticking to your guns and continuing to work at a high-level of excellence...Force Field PR (home to: Neon Indian, KISSES, Toro Y Moi, Dan Deacon, Vivian Girls, Ariel Pink...our entire blog) is doing just this. This leads me to the post in question: a new video and MP3 from Sweden's Club 8 -- their newest album, The People's Record drops today in Sweden/certain areas of Europe and May 18 in the states;  both releases are via Labrador. Force Field had this to say which sold me:

Sweden's Club 8 is commonly recognized for their personal blend of melancholic, dreamy and irresistibly catchy style of pop [which] has been a forerunner for bands like Camera Obscura, jj, and Kings of Convenience. The People's Record marks the beginning of a new epoch... The result is unique mix of Swedish pop melodies and African rhythms - undoubtedly one of the most unique, captivating and catchiest pop records of the year!

Kisses: "Bermuda" (Active Child Remix)

[mp3] Kisses: "Bermuda"

We're a little behind in getting this one up for you, but we would be remiss to not mention a track from our previous band to watch, Kisses, that was remixed by another fantastic rising artist Active Child. Kisses seem to be taking a second to make their impact felt out here on the East Coast, but after their current trip to Europe and subsequent LA date, we expect they will head out this way and begin to generate the attention they deserve. The Bermuda 7" is out now, with their amazing full length The Heart of The Nightlife coming soon, all via the LA-based Surrounded by Sound label.

Kinda Cool But Kinda a Big Tool

Some of us just have more time on their hands then others...ask certain Starkians right now and they'll tell you. Regardless, this guy just has way too much time on his hands. The irony of it all though, we are posting it, Mashable posted it and the video already has over 3K hits on YouTube. Still great to be able to call someone a tool on a Friday -- so 90s of us. Is it 7PM yet?

New Mountain Man

We posted about Mountain Man's upcoming album Made The Harbor (7/20) and today we get the first song from that album "Soft Skin." Happy Friday. (VIA)

Stark Spotlight: The Romwebers

Like most music fans, we here at Stark love to work backwards, piecing together the puzzle of influences that make our favorite artists who they are. The Dexter Romweber Duo is a group that would cause a lot of "ah ha" moments for mainstream fans if they weren't so damn obscure. The group is fronted by Dexter Romweber, singer/guitarist of 80's garage/rockabilly duo the Flat Duo Jets. One listen to a Duo Jets track is evidence enough that while these guys weren't even big when they were big, they had the ears of some future heavy hitters. Jack White wastes no time referencing Flat Duo Jets when asked where he managed to come up with "that White Stripes sound." Not only does White embrace the group's obvious influence on him, but he is also helping breath new life into Dex Romweber's career. In keeping with his "digital/vinyl" only approach, White teamed up with Romweber for a pair of records currently out on Third Man. "The Dexter Romweber Duo: Live at Third Man" LP hit shelves on February 4 with limited run 7" titled "The WInd Did Blow" currently awaiting a repress. For more info on the Dex Romweber Duo check out Third Man's website. And seriously, if you're into the garage-rock thing YouTube Flat Duo Jets.

"Berceuse"

A very cool, but all too short video from LA's Juliette Commagere for her song "Berceuse." Gloriously nostalgic and sad, the wistful pianos lines and simple vocals match up perfectly with the setting sun, and (very creative) footage of surfers filmed in infrared. From the PR:
After touring with The Bird and the Bee and Pete Yorn among others, Juliette is preparing for an August 2010 release of her second full-length, accompanied by the same recording partners - Joachim Cooder and Martin Pradler. The new album will also feature a guest appearance by legendary ambient trumpet player Jon Hassel. Keep your ears peeled.

Villagers: "Becoming a Jackal"

The press buzz has been slowly building around Conor O'Brien, the driving force and usually the only member of Villagers. Growing up in a suburb of Dublin, O'Brien has been honing his craft since age 12, and is finally ready unleash his debut album Becoming A Jackal June 8th via Domino. Yet, first comes the release of a 7" Tuesday, May 11th. O'Brien treads on familiar territory with his acoustic guitar driven songs and accent tinged vocals. There are clear signs of talent here, and our appetites have been sufficiently whet with this first track. We're not that cheap a date though. It will take a few more tunes and probably a live performance to count us as true fans, but Villagers are clearly a band/artist to keep on your radar in the coming weeks as they head to the states for a string of dates including Union Hall and Joe's Pub. More to come for sure. See tour dates, and the video for "Becoming a Jackal" after the jump.

Villagers US Dates:

Mon. Jun 21 - Washington, DC @ DC9

Stereo Total Release Baby Ouh! on Kill Rock Stars

What do we know about Stereo Total? Not much. What do we think of the title track from their newest album, Baby Ouh! out now on Kill Rock Stars? Mixed feelings. Being the suckers that we are for French-speaking music and a good dance beat (See: Yelle), we gave it a shot; plus, Kill Rock Stars very rarely leads us astray. Baby Ouh! is a Frankenstein of a release -- ST recorded over 40 tracks in preparation for this release, while only 17 made the final cut. Currently hanging their hats in Berlin, Germany -- ST are gearing up for a North American summer kicking it off at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on Aug. 25. This album marks the band's 11th release to-date starting in 1995 with their debut, Oh Ah!

Standard Fare: "Philadelphia"

It's not always easy to communicate straight-forward stories or emotions through lyrics and melodies. Yet, on the new single "Philadelphia" from Sheffield's Standard Fare singer Emma Kupa puts the listener directly in her shoes -- shoes that happen to reside in England while her boy (or girl) of interest lives in Philadelphia. Haven't we all been in this situation? A quick visit to a city, passionate 48 hour love affair -- then the ultimate realization that it will be a year before you see them again, if you ever do. Often the feelings fade as quickly as they came, but Emma and co., have given us a fantastic song that captures that moment of departure simply, and sweetly.

Sun Kil Moon: "Australian Winter"

"Australian Winter" is the bleak and gorgeous new track from Mark Kozelek's project Sun Kil Moon. Spring listening this is not, but it is another offering from the amazingly consistent Kozelek, who recorded his new album Admiral Fell Promises (7/13 Caldo Verde) alone with just a nylon string guitar. Looking forward to hearing more from this.

Kozelek’s solo acoustic shows

07/29 – London, UK @Union Chapel
07/31 – Giske, Norway @ Sommerfesten

New Sade: "Babyfather"

So we've given away a vinyl of Sade's excellent comeback album Soldier of Love, (out now) and written about it a few times. Today, we get the gorgeous new video for "Babyfather." Sade is of course, a flawless beauty, but the rich colors and the set for this video are the perfect compliment to the track. This is probably the best looking thing you will put your eyes on today. Malachai Debut New Video: "Snowflake"

Earlier this winter we wrote about the intriguing project from Bristol, Malachai. Today we get a new video for their track "Snowflake." It's a dude in a monkey mask cruising around. What can be better. Malachai's LP Ugly Side of Love is out now on Domino.

Delta Spirit: History From Below

We've been spinning the new Delta Spirit record, History From Below, for more than a week, and it's a marvelous step forward from their debut, 2008's Ode To Sunshine. While Ode was heavily lauded across the board, it failed to connect with us, despite falling right into our wheelhouse: home-grown, jangly country-tinged rock. Yet, there is something different about the songs on the new record. While not straying far from the formula of their first record, it's clear that the time between records spent with artists such as John McCauley (Deer Tick) and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) as well as producers of 'History' Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket) and Eli Thomson has paid dividends on the songwriting front. Delta Spirit's new record is melodic to the core and equal parts intimate and huge. History From Below comes out June 8 on Rounder. We're still waiting for new approved music to post.

As an AMAZING bonus, our longtime favorites, Ezra Furman and The Harpoons will be opening dates on Delta Spirit's huge national tour. Here's hoping for some solid national exposure for our friends from Brooklyn. Dates after the jump.
