Real Estate: "Talking Backwards"

Despite our very real state of being quite over this band for the past few years, Real Estate's new tune "Talking Backwards" is quite excellent, recalling the best parts of their previous work while adding warmer colors, getting away from the horrible beach rock thing and sounding even a little bit like our favorite Philadelphian Kurt Vile.

Jangle-Pop With A Purpose

Everybody jangles these days. It’s just the coolest thing. You can’t go anywhere without some reverby guitar gently massaging your eardrums, in that safe, pleasant, afraid-to-take chances type of way. But hey, after Real Estate “broke out” who can blame them? So I initially scoffed when I came across Tyler Jon Tyler the other day on AZ. But, after spending some time with their tunes, I find them charming, well-written, and without all of the usual pretentious trimmings, such as hollow and distorted vocals meant to hide out-of-key singing (Twin Sister) and poorly played guitars (The Beets).

While this post seems to be out to condemn the lo-fi genre, which we’ve certainly been vocal about our disdain for in the past, it’s less about that, and more about how surprised we are to be enjoying Tyler Jon Tyler’s self-titled debut so much. We don’t mean that to sound cheap either. There is a youthful passion here and a clear joy for playing that cuts through all the noise and hype of the lo fi world and strips the music down to its core elements of solid songwriting and quality execution. There is a larger purpose behind these songs that seems to be more about the actual music, than where that music fits into the blog spectrum at large. It's refreshing.

Arguably the two best artists to come out of the Woodsist/Beach-wave movement that dominated the blog world in 2009, Real Estate and Woods are teaming up for a tour this spring. While many bands purveyed the aforementioned reverbed-out, pseudo-psych/folk tunes last year, Real Estate, and even more-so Woods backed up their vocal and guitar effects with some honest songwriting talent. No doubt you already have them, but Woods' excellent Songs of Shame, and Real Estate's self-titled effort are both out now and recommended pick-ups. They hit The Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 12. Full tour dates after the jump.

Real Estate is a Stark-semi-fuzzed-out-summer-favorite. One the most memorable forays into the band's live show came underneath the JMZ subway at the Todd P-sponsored, DIY, stripped-down show highlighting the bands of the Woodsist label. We wrote about our drunken musical escapades and our shear enjoyment of Real Estate, a band that truly stood out in that hot Summer haze. Now, the band is readying the release of their self-titled debut LP for the Woodsist label which drops on Nov. 17. As usual, a full fall tour has been set. New Fresh and Only's & Ducktails

We caught the Fresh and Only's during our little 4th of July excursion to the Woodsist/Captured Tracks festival. We were a little hazy come the late afternoon hours (blame 99 cent 24 oz Coors and July sun), but the Fresh and Only's were a standout alongside the clear favorite Real Estate. The San Fran based group have been fairly prolific in their output, and will now drop Grey Eyed Girls on September 15th via Woodsist (of course). The band is bringing their lo-fi brand of 80s synth/garage/classic rock to the road, touring with Stephen Malkmus (!) and usual suspects Thee Oh Sees amongst others. Tour dates after the jump.

Stereogum premiered a new track from Ducktails... it's a little downtrodden and predictably ramshackle - a simple bass guitar melody drives the track which has a lovely late afternoon relaxing nature to it. Enjoy peoples.

Woodsist Fest Recap

So - we had a fantastic Independence Day out at the Broadway Backyard for the Woodsist/Captured Tracks festival. We soaked up the beautiful rays beneath the JMZ, took part in our first "twitter meet-up" with some great NYC blogs, and indulged in the $1 24oz Coors cans from the bodega next door. Together with our first live experiences with Dum Dum Girls, Ganglians, The Fresh and Onlys, and many more - including the highlight Real Estate - the day was a giant success. Our new acquaintance Soundbites did an ace job compiling video from yesterday's show, which admittedly got a little hazy for us Starkians right around when Dum Dum girls took the stage, so I'm glad it's documented here. Sunny Pop from Dark Places

[mp3] Cold Cave: "Life Magazine"

So, dig this picture for a second, then listen to the mp3. This sort of distorted, hazy, summer-pop seems something more along the lines of Real Estate than the darkly clad Philly band Cold Cave. Cold Cave is a mish-mash of musicians including ex-Xiu Xiu member Caralee McElroy, Max G. Morton, . Benoit, and Dominick Fernow. Their LP Love Comes Close is out now, but don't expect the whole thing to sound this bright. These musicians are known for their darker synth-pop (a la Joy Division/New Order), but you can be assured their sense of melody will still be intact.
