Continuing on the success streak set by their last record Zonoscope (and of course In Ghost Colors before that) Cut Copy's "Free Your Mind" is again keys heavy, overlaid with organic hand drums, and the classic synth/club drum rhythms that are their signature. Cut Copy and Toro y Moi both made excellent records this year. Here at the midway point, we're going to give the edge to Cut Copy on this one, but Toro is due for another spin or two as we reach the apex of the summer.
All competitions aside, this is a great remix of an even better tune, Cut Copy's "Blink and You'll Miss a Revolution." Zonoscope, the Australian band's recent full length didn't initially hit as hard as In Ghost Colours, but what it lacked in visceral gut-punch-power, it gained in subtle melodies and well-crafted tunes that have sustained their potency over the span of several months - not an easy task. There aren't many details yet regarding the forthcoming Cut Copy record, but yesterday we did get a taste of the new single "Where I'm Going" which you can grab below. The Australian dance-pop band's last effort has been the soundtrack to many a Stark party, and may or may not be responsible for the destruction of several coffee tables due to aggressive dancing.
We've been highly anticipating more music from the ultra-elusive NY group The Golden Filter. They have been all over of-late releasing tracks and remixing Peter Bjorn & John, Cut Copy, and the awesome Empire of the Sun. They come from the Italians Do It Better school of electro- disco-pop, which is honestly damn fine with us. With Infectious melody, well produced beats and lovely female vocals The Golden Filter are fixed to be one of the more under the radar standouts of this genre in 2009. We're heading out to Le Poisson Rouge this Friday to catch The Golden Filter in one of their first North American shows. After NY, they head to Europe and SXSW before setting out on a tour with the Presets, which finds them back at Webster Hall April 3. The LPR show is being presented by Friction NYC and also includes Heartsrevolution, Pink Skull, and DJ's Finger on the Pulse. Going to be awesome. Tour dates and a video after the jump.

We wrote on Friday about heading to the Mercury Lounge tonight to check out Australian newcomers, Mercy Arms. Now for your sampling pleasure, here are two mp3s. We wrote about the great new band out of Australia Mercy Arms a bit ago. Now, they are coming to the US to make their live debut at the Mercury Lounge in NY on Monday at 8:00pm. Mercy Arms have been low profile in the US to-date, but we expect that to change fairly quickly. The band is coming off recent dates overseas with White Denim, Cut Copy, Ladyhawke and Amazing Baby. While we'll forgive them for sharing the stage with Amazing Baby, it's great to see them teaming up with some great bands.

Run by ex NME editor James Oldham, the label has seen debut releases in the past from The Bravery, The Horrors and Patrick Wolf. Oldham signed UK sensation Duffy last year, and was previously most known as the UK journalist first to pick up on both The Strokes and The Vines.
Mercy Arms' sound is dark and hazy - at times, recalling current UK fave Glasvegas or friends Cut Copy. Of course, there is also a strong connection to the UK and American post-punk bands of the 80s. The vocals are strong and melodic, cutting through the fuzzed-out mix. We gotta also say there is nothing like a well placed tambourine to brighten up a track. Mercy Arms' sound and look give them the ability to garner fans of the rock, indie and dance scenes. Without sounding overly commercial, their music is accessible and comes from a solid rock background. It's always hard to break bands in the US, and it remains to be seen whether Mercy Arms will be able to move past that, and find success stateside.Yet, they have as good a chance as any other band out there now to do so.

On first listen, I felt like I'd discovered a lost Ride album (love for Andy Bell? Anyone…). The record was produced by fellow Australian Tony Cohen; Tony has produced fellow Aussie's The Birthday Party, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, and the Dirty Three. Mercy Arms have toured in their native land with The Pixies, The Strokes, Cut Copy, and Editors. Not bad company. Definitely a band to keep an eye out for when they come stateside. There's a host of Cut Copy remixes available on iTunes and their entire album is streaming on their myspace.

I've been meaning to post on this group for a bit — Cut Copy's second record, In Ghost Colours, is a surprisingly enjoyable collection of throwback, pseudo new-wave 80s house music. As there have been many folks down this road of late, it took me a second to realize why I liked these songs — they seem unpretentious, as if the players are playing for the love of the tune rather than trying to emulate an image or sound of a certain era. This morning pitchfork slapped them with a best new music title, something I was surprised, but certainly not disappointed to see. Here's a video for your Monday morning.
