We're back in action after a whirlwind tour of LA which found us in TV and recording studios, beach bonfires, desert hills, and sceney brunch locales. Yet, after all that it's great to be back amongst our beer-swilling, snarky, non-driving New York brethren. So on our walk to work this morning, with a fresh cup of Mud, this little gem came on to really sweeten the deal. Total Babes' Swimming Through Sunlight drops next week courtesy of the great folks at Old Flame Records. Total Babes have been getting some extra love from the press as it features members of Cloud Nothings, who if you remember, made a pretty excellent record themselves this year. Grab Total Babes' album next week, and throw that Cloud Nothings record back on your shuffle to hold you over till then. "Be So True" doesn't rewrite the lo fi pop songbook, but with its Wavves-inflected sound the tune captures a rock-solid hook, perfect for those Labor Day parties complete with 24oz novelty Coors Lights.

New MillionYoung: Replicants

We've been enjoying new music from MillionYoung for a few weeks now, and while it may sound trite, they are always the band that comes on shuffle and you go, "damn, who is this?" While oft lumped into the already-dead and meaningless chillwave genre - MillionYoung's new album Replicants transcends whatever tired monikers lazy writers bestowed upon them when they first hit the blogosphere several years ago. While largely the product of one man, Mike Diaz, this is no lo-fi bedroom affair. Replicants is sweeping and progressive, moving from moments of full-band rock to stolen minutes of subtle layered synth and hushed vocals. Diaz has dialed up his talent on Replicants, demonstrating he is beholden to no one genre or label. Replicants drops digtally 1/15 and physically 2/15 on Old Flame/Rix records. VIA

MillionYoung Signs to Old Flame Records

We've been following MillionYoung (aka 22 year old Mike Diaz), and the quickly rising Old Flame Records for a good bit, and it was much to our pleasant surprise when we learned during CMJ that the two were coming together in an epic haze of synth, driving rhythms and full-on pop hooks. Old Flame will release MillionYoung's debut LP entitled Replicants, digitally on January 11 and as a 12" and c.d. on February 15, 2011. The new single (Lando) "Calrissian" actually cuts down a bit on the haze and dreaminess of their previous work, and offers a more taut and direct approach, which is ultimately more rewarding than moody soundscapes. Take it from us, what other tunes we've heard of the new record deliver in spades, making this a clear highlight of early 2011.
