Lucero To Release Major Label Debut

Lucero - "Smoke" (Stream Only)

1372 Overton Park, Lucero's sixth full-length record is slated for an Oct, 6 release. What makes this album special is that it will be Ben Nichols & Co.'s first LP on a major -- Universal Republic Records. After years of relentless touring through the Bible Belt and Southern states, Lucero emerge, still with dirt on their hands, whiskey in their blood, but with a major label in their pocket. As they say, Lucero now epitomizes the sentement, "hardworking band makes good." Their new record was produced by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem) and features such guests as Cat Power, Al Green and Solomon Burke. Enjoy the newest track from the album titled "Smoke" for stream above. Our only concern is that Nichols' vocals come off a bit too over-produced. If the tune is any insight into how the rest of the album will progress, what we have on our hands is a rollicking-southern hybrid of Gaslight Anthem and the Hold Steady.

It can't be easy for a singer songwriter in the folk genre. Every night in every town you have countless men and women slinging their songs with acoustic guitars and softly sung lyrics. Luckily for us, Brooklyn-based Sharon Van Etten has found her way out of the mire and into the eye of the press, receiving rave reviews (see our thoughts here) for her new album because I was in love, due May 9 on Language of Stone. Hew new video "For You" debuted on Pitchfork, no less. Yes, even they label her as a Cat Power disciple, but her songs and this video are a stark reminder that only a mass of talent and a good voice can propel one above the sea of open-mic-mediocrity. Van Etten is currently touring Europe with the equally great and underappreciated Great Lake Swimmers.

mr. Gnome - " Night of the Crickets" New Video, Free Album Stream & NYC Tour Date

mr. Gnome (lowercase spelling and all) is a Cleveland duo of vocalist/guitarist Nicole Barille and drummer Sam Meister. Following the release of their newest album, Deliver This Creature, Barille and Meister have begun to draw some hefty musical comparisons: Cat Power, Portishead, Blonde Redhead, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and Death Cab round out the list. The duo's newest video for "Night of the Crickets" is animalistic, a bit morbid and well, kind of creepy-- Barille's raspy female voice laid atop the somewhat psychedelic percussion of Meister works and keeps you listening. Also, when you have the "Sand People" from Star Wars make an appearance in your video, there is not much that can go wrong.
