Live Wrap-Up: tUnE-yArDs at Pier 54

From beat one, the face painted, feather clad Merrill Garbus co-opted the crowd at New York’s Pier 54 last night, forming a sort of afro-urban tribe moving wildly below a fat full moon. Sticking largely to tracks from her March release w h o k i l l, Garbus made it apparent that she’s far more than one of the many tourists dabbling in the current afro-pop trend.

If you only read her bio, it’d be easy to mistake tUnE-yArDs for another quick burning Pitchfork buzz band blending layered sounds over poly-rhythms and dance beats. But it’s Garbus’ chameleon of a voice takes it to another level. Whether yowling like a tribal call from an Amadou and Mariam track, crooning ala Nina Simone or spitting rhyms, there’s no question who is the boss (of everyone) when she’s at the mic.

With the crowd in perpetual motion, Garbus also showed her growing experience level, holding just enough head room to kick the energy up one more level. This was no where more apparent than during her current single “Bizness.” After layering in her improvised marimba (made of beer bottles) and vocal riffage, the audience bought in for the four-minute ride, savoring the anticipation provided by the culminating drop out.  Even the crusty “seen it all, heard it all” NYC sound guy jumped.  It was that good.

This Week's Notable Releases

Amadou & Miriam:
Welcome to Mali (Nonesuch)
MP3: Amadou & Mariam - "Salbali"
_____
We can't say enough about this Malian, husband and wife duo. Their modernized African music, infused with American R&B and Rap influences may cause spontaneous dancing, porch lounging and cocktail sipping. Listen wisely.

The Decemberists:
The Hazards of Love (Capitol)
MP3: The Rake's Song - MP3
_____
You've probably heard enough about this albums' genre classifications. They don't want the "rock opera" label, but you be the judge. Some of the album jaunts hauntingly through love loss, while others rise up in Transfigurational-style beauty. Colin Meloy's voice is no different here as on other albums, so if you want that standard Decemberists sound, this is for you.

Pearl Jam:
Ten (Reissue) (Epic)
_____
It's Pearl Jam. "Jeremy," "Daughter," "Even Flow," "Alive," "Porch." Give me a fucking break. You'll buy it.

Dan Deacon:
Bromst (Carpark)
MP3: "Get Older"
_____
This is Deacon's Merriweather Post Pavillion; we knew the day that he went slightly mainstream with more accessible, danceable tunes, would be the day drooling, and fawning would occur. Today's the day. Bromst explodes with pithy electro-jams, and songs, may we boldly say, you can sing to? Yeah, this is the shiznit.

Amadou & Mariam: Live Video + Tour Dates

[mp3]

Mali's husband and wife duo, Mariam Doumbia and Amadou Bagayoko have been Stark favorites for some time now. Since first hearing their 2004 release, Dimanche A Bamako, we were sold; the good-feeling, summery, well-crafted African music did it for us.

Amadou and Mariam are set to release their newest effort, Welcome to Mali, which has Americanized, but only in positive ways. There is more English speaking and rap/R&B influences, yet the African soul is still ever-present. Welcome to Mali drops March 24 on Nonesuch. *2009 Best of nominee.* Pre-order the album here.

Amadou & Mariam Announce NA Tour Dates

The iPod shuffle is the great equalizer. Tracks and albums come and go on our new release playlist faster than... well, fast ok? The albums that endure (see: Animal Collective, Aela Diane, Lissy Trullie, Harlem) are usually what turn out to be some of the best albums of the year. Since receiving the new Amadou & Mariam several weeks ago - it has reigned supreme on our playlist, hardly ever receiving the death knell of the dreaded skip button. Welcome to Mali, has seemingly been around forever - but it is finally seeing the light of day in the US on March 24th via Nonesuch. Today, Pitchfork announced A&M's full run of North American tour dates, including dates with Coldplay. Awesome for expanding the fan base, but really? Weird. ANYWAY. Amadou & Mariam Get US Release Date

Amadou & Mariam - "Sabali" (stream)

More good news today... (Neko, Ryan Adams (maybe), Raveonettes, now Amadou?!). Lovely Malian husband and wife duo Amadou and Mariam have finally locked down a solid US label and release date for their forthcoming Pitchfork approved record Welcome to Mali. We are glad to say that Nonesuch Records again has their hand in this one, releasing the record March 24th in collaboration with Because Music. While we loved Dimanche a Bamako, ALL of their records are worth listening to. Just add Welcome to Mali to the list. I mean, A&M even got Damon Albarn to produce a track on this ("Sabali").
