We've Labored Hard

So we leave you for the gloriously long weekend with a new video from Bonnie Prince Billy. “How About Thank You” From the Chijimi 10″ was directed by Mike Aho. Killin. So when we get back, it's no more reverby jangly summer music like Holiday Shores or Best Coast or any of that stuff. It's gonna be all sad Fall music like Joe Henry, Beach House, Neutral Milk Hotel and Magnolia Electric Co. So get ready. Kidding of course. What's the rule on wearing canvas boat shoes after Labor Day? I intend to find out the hard way.

While we're not quite ready to come out with such a bold statement (we've only had it for a week) folks around the blogosphere are hailing Fanfarlo's Reservoir as one of the top records of the year. From our first few listens, we can at least concur that it's a damn fine piece of musicianship and a really solid record. Blending elements of Bon Iver, and the organic nature of Beirut, Fanfarlo are shooting on a straight course to success. The band is well aware of the '09 model that the more content you release, the better it is for your band (given you're in a good band). They have recorded several DIY videos, that show the band's talent and enjoyment for playing their (and others) songs. Above is a cover of Bonnie Price Billy's gem, "A Minor Place." Reservoir is only a dollar on their website right now, and is available with exclusive tracks. Someone should tell Bob Lefsetz about these folks, because clearly they know what it takes to be a band in 2009.

Great to be back after a nice layover, and it's even better to be sharing with you a brand new mp3 from Toronto's The Silt. (I still need to correct myself each time after thinking their name is The Slit. And I may or may not have seen a porn with that title before.) Anywho, we've got an exclusive taste of the folk trio's upcoming LP Cat's Peak, which will be released a week from now via Fire Records. "No Twig" is a slice of slow-moving country that sounds like it's about to collapse any second, channeling the dilapidated structure of many Bonnie "Prince" Billy songs. Come to think of it, frontman Ryan Driver has a bit of a Will Oldham thing going on in his voice, which is never a bad thing. You can currently stream two other songs from Cat's Peak on the band's Myspace, including the funky "Come Back To The Willow." Silt. Not Slit. Silt, silt, silt....
