Laura Marling - "Colorado Girl (Townes Van Zandt Cover)"

As you sit in your Winter doldrums, awaiting another snow storm, sit back and take in Laura Marling's take on a Townes Van Zandt classic "Colorado Girl." Why she hasn't done more Townes covers before, we don't know -- she certainly has the guitar skills to do so. Don't get depressed. It is just snow.

New Music:: Laura Marling - "Master Hunter"

Dig this new tune from Laura Marling, "Master Hunter" from her forthcoming album Once I Was An Eagle out May 28th. She is really changing her musical tact in a positive, modern way all while sticking to her traditional song structures and lyrical nuances. We like the nod to Bob Dylan Laura.

New Laura Marling: "Where Can I Go"

Somehow this slipped past our filter, but there's a gorgeous new track circulating from Laura Marling's mew album Once I Was An Eagle (produced by Ethan Johns out on May 28). Who knew? Now I know, and you know too. Enjoy. Thx SVB.

New Video: Laura Marling - "All My Rage"

A nice second single from Ms. Marling off A Creature I Don't Know. The video is a bit creepy and has a Christmas Toy vibe (still unwatchable,) but it is enjoyable nonetheless.

New Video: Laura Marling - 'Sophia"

I still don't know how I feel about this song from the UK's Laura Marling: on one hand, you have a Joni Mitchell-esque guitar ballad. Then, at about 2:40, the band kicks in and things get very AAA radio. So, I am kind of stumped...but Marling's talent for songwriting is evident. Her crystalline voice is unwaivering and well, I don't know, maybe I like the AAA vibe. You be the judge. Her third record, A Creature I Don't Know releases on Sept. 12 in the UK, Sept. 13 in the US.

Poni Hoax - Images of Sigrid
Rating: 80
Dance parties beware! Best known for their single "Antibodies" this French-based electro-pop group combines baritone vocal lines, a female back-up singer and driving beats. Don't go looking for this in record stores just yet -- it is merely a french import. It is hard to draw references from this album, where as the mood, musical styles and vocals drift in and out of genre classifications. Punk guitar rifts here, energized beats and group choral singalongs there. Overall, an auspicious and powerful record.

Ezra Furman & The Harpoons - Inside the Human Body
Rating: 75
Furman relies heavily on his band of college buddies, which might have been a mistake. The Harpoons lack tight musical skills making the more prominent instrumental backing on this album hit-or-miss. We are here for Furman and there is not enough of him. While the more punk/rock n' roll-infused tracks show an exciting new side of Furman, they lack the intimacy of Furman past -- to-date, this album is the biggest departure from previous records.

Chairlift - Does You Inspire You
Rating: 73
Another band made famous by Apple. This record, however, is balanced nicely. Chairlift's ominous and sprawling musical techniques work from song-to-song. IPod tune "Bruises" is more fun than the lyrics may suggest. The song bounces along as Caroline Polachek's vocals bring to mind other indie-popsters such as Feist, Laura Marling, and Camera Obscura. The album ebbs and flows through angelic vocal harmonies, electronic beats and vamped guitar lines.

http://festivalwise.com/artists/Image/FieldDay_Logo.jpg
To all you U.K.'ers out there, first of all thanks for reading. We see your blips on our Google Analytics statistics and they are much appreciated. As it stands, our readership is strongest in London. If you are in an outlying region of the U.K. and think London natives are Wankers, please read more. Man Utd. and Liverpool fans we are looking to you.

To the topic at hand — the 2008 Field Day festival to be held in Victoria Park (East London) Aug. 9, recently announced their artist line up. Some of Stark's favorites are billed to play including, but not limited to: Laura Marling, Les Savy Fav, Of Montreal, Noah and the Whale, Dan Deacon, Fionn Regan, Lightspeed Champion, The Field and more.

If we had any money to our names and or if we were unemployed, Stark would be on the next flight — but alas, we are poor as a result of being underpaid. Tell those artists we say hi though.
