Luyas, Long Overdue

The Luyas | Live @ The Rialto | Montreal, QC from A Story Told Well on Vimeo.

In honor of our recent trip to the north country, we decided it's time to get up a long overdue post on Montreal's Luyas. This band's cache has slowly (more like rapidly) been growing, capped off by a special invite from The National to play their "secret" venue next to Other Music during release week for High Violet. Luyas, being the good sports they are packed a bag lunch, woke up at dawn, and drove all the way to NY for a 40 minute non-paying gig. We caught up with the band that night, and were sufficiently wowed by their tastefully arty approach to disjointed indie rock. Lead singer Jessie Stein's pointed vocal attack is the clear centerpiece of the group, but her bandmates are crack musicians in their own right, adding different elements of percussion, keys and guitar to give Luyas' driving melodies a unique texture and style. They have a new record coming this Fall and a few NY dates around Northside. Dig those after the jump.
